Domain Name Sysytem The most sustainable tool for development

Description  Domain Name System(DNS).  It is an incredible platform that locates, resolves and maps a specific computer within a domain into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.  Host names are human readable compared to IP format.

Structure of the DNS  Hierachical structure.  Comprises of three major components; 1.Domain name space and resource records. 2.Zones and name servers. 3.Resolvers. The above components are related to each other.

Operation How is the mapping carried out? 1.User friendly addresses typed in a web browser. 2.A query/series of queries sent to the name servers to locate the IP address of the requested computer. 3.The query comprises of the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the requested computer. 4.The name server uses this FQDN to locate the IP address.

Adminstration Decentralized adminstration due to size. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)

Global impacts Drastic changes on businesses. Improved education. Readily available information. Upsurge of industries. Ecommerce.

DNS limitations Security is the most significant limitation.

Means of tackling security issues. Government's involvements e.g U.K legislation such as the Computer Misuse Act (1990). European legislations to combat unwanted s. National Infrastructure Security Coordination centre. Global protection by Domain Name System Security Extensions(DNSSEC)
