Sustainable food systems for healthy people Towards a systems approach for Food, Nutrition & Health 26 May 2016, Prof. Pieter van ‘t Veer (for the project team)

Topics in GOH Health and (emerging) infectious disease Health and environment (incl climate change) Health and society Health and food “To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life” m m Global One Health (GOH) is the combined effort of multiple disciplines to improve the health of humans, animals and plants within sustainable ecosystems at global level by using an integrated systems approach to come to transnational and global policy, research and practices.

3 sustainable FOOD systems for HEALTHY people Advance sustainable and healthy food systems by means of a case study and developing the supportive WUR-wide LOD infrastructure Scope and objective Wageningen aims to create the EU knowledge hub in this domain.

Interdiscipl team: PSG, ASG, AFSG, SSG, DLO & WU 4 Indicators, data and models for ecological sustainability (PSG, ASG) and human health (AFSG, SSG) Expertise platform & LOD- infrastruct. (SSG, AFSG) Budget allocation for WU? Room for ESG!

Topic emerging in research agenda’s 5 SUSTAINABILITY, FOOD & NUTRITION SECURITY, HEALTH

SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE

Challenge: Double burden malnutrition (Global Nutrition Report, IFPRI, 2015) Infectious diseases  Non communicable diseases

Increasing pressure on the food systems Population growth & demand of food Global warming and food production

Food systems, nutrition and health are dynamic Ref: National Research Council. Dietary Reference Intakes for Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, and Choline. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press, Western Economy LMIC Low& Middle Income Countries Nutritional deficiency & NCDs Risk of food safety & NCDs Too little Too much Emerging economy Safe Healthy Sustainable Transitions Agro-technology, economy Nutritional health Population health risks

Food systems research: indicators and actors Handelingsperspectieven Land use, water use, fossil fuels, GHG, waste, urbanisation biodiversity, eco- toxicity, acidification, eutrophication Costs, income, price, trade, accessibility, safety stunting, overweight, health & disease, vulnerability, life expectancy

Indicators (parameters or metrics for tracking performance) (e.g., DALYs; household dietary diversity score, women’s empowerment in agriculture index) Enablers: Case studies and LOD infrastructure as stepping stone to the EU Food & Health RI Data (big data, food web, research data, policy alternatives) Tools (instruments and systems for data collection) (survey module or instruments to collect data required to compute an index) Methods (processes, approaches for systematic inquiry) (e.g. study design, impact evaluation, counterfactuals, pathway analysis Models (on food system alternatives as related to health) Case studies Review indicators, tools and data (2016) Methods and models for trade-offs, synergies, policy options Position paper & policy briefs Infrastructure Vocabulary and LOD system WUR portal and expertise organised Leading role in European Food & Health RI (ESFRI)

Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy People Exploiting the unique combination of expertise on the agri-food chain and human health at Wageningen UR 12 Join our kick-off on July 4 th !

Ambition: Linked Open Data infrastructure on sustainable food systems for healthy people connected to EU Food & Health RI Outcome: healthy, sustainable and safe food system (H2020 SC1, SC2) Food system approach: products and actors, interdisciplinary Enabler: Food and health RI (ESFRI) embedded in the European Open Science Cloud (FAIR) 13

Scope and objectives The ultimate goal of the programme “Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy People” is: a common ground for strategically connected research areas of food systems, environmental sustainability and diet-related health of populations. WUR aims to create the pan-European knowledge hub in this domain.

Integrating & Research ACTIVITIES Integrating activities ( )  Activity 1: Expert platform  Activity 4: Linked Open Data infrastructure Research activities (year by year)  Activity 2: Indicators healthy diet  Activity 3: Indicators sustainable foods Activities : Trade-offs & synergies, LMIC & western WUR CoP to support (inter)national lead & development edu/training Building the scientific case for the pan-European Food and Health Research Infrastructure

a Ecology Human Health Animal welfare Economy Spatial planning Social Welbeing Dietary pattern Challenge: Interdisciplinarity people profit planet Based on WRR (2014) SHARP model in SUSFANS (2015–19)

Multidisciplinary basis for the Food & Health RI Unique combination of agri-food and health research, public and private stakeholders education and training..

“To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life”  Healthy and safe food for healthy lives  Global food & nutrition security  Sustainable food production “ Strategic plan Wageningen UR m m Global One Health (GOH) is the combined effort of multiple disciplines to improve the health of humans, animals and plants within sustainable ecosystems at global level by using an integrated systems approach to come to transnational and global policy, research and practices.
