Transition Absolutely key to the successful implementation of the policy Primary and Secondary schools should work together on content, skills and approaches to learning to ensure effective transition Ideally the secondary will have opportunities for further study of the same L3

Transition and L3 Challenges Agreement and cooperation needed from all the cluster schools Should be ensuring depth in language skills

L3 in the Secondary Does not have to be the same as L3 in the primary Does not have to be studied in the same depth as L2 Should offer a progressive experience that goes beyond word level

L3 in the Secondary Flexible opportunities to study more than one language to the level of a National Qualification in the Senior Phase LLWA In addition to L2

Inclusion Language learning is an entitlement of all pupils till the end of the BGE (S3) Schools should not assume that young people with ASN are not required to study a language

Challenges There is still no clear model that works for everyone Teacher provision Attitudes to languages Finding time in the curriculum

Benefits Better communicators Deeper knowledge of their own and other languages Increased uptake of languages Citizenship and values
