Career: the sum total of paid and unpaid work, learning and life roles you undertake throughout your life. Our careers are influenced by many things: family, values, education, culture, interests, skills and more. The world of work focuses on employment, but includes the influences on our careers. Today we show you where to start exploring the world of work in Australia… but the exploring is up to you

World of Work Where to start exploring the world of work? 3 online tools that might help looking at the world of work 1.The Job Guide

World of Work The Job Guide The Job Guide is a job directory, explaining different requirements of each job, including the skills, tasks and education needed for each type of job. It is a good place to get information and to learn about jobs and careers in Australia because It gives useful information about how to work out what occupations suit you best, based on your interests and abilities. The Job Guide also shows useful contact addresses under each entry so that you can find out more detailed information about the occupation.

World of Work How to navigate the Job Guide You can search for a job title using the search field if you know what job you want to find information on. On the left hand side, there are other tools to explore your career options

World of Work Building your career Use the activity to explore your career options and build a career. Step 1: Are you looking at an old occupation or a new direction? (if it is an old occupation, go to step 7) Step 2: Click on on the left side of the page. Step 3: Click on and then click on and read through the information

World of Work Building your career Step 4: click on Read the screen to see the broad areas of work which may interest you and then click on or fill in the chart below. What areas are of interest to you?

World of Work Building your career Step 5: Under the Type of work chart, under the heading, click on. On the ‘Jobs Chart’ screen click on your area of interest to go to the page. Read the page and look at the list of jobs listed in this area. Scroll down and click on any job of interest and read all about it. List the jobs that interest you: Example:

World of Work Building your career Step 6: On the left menu clickthen click. After that, click on. Read the screen and click to go to the screen. Under, search for any job you may be interested in. Read the job description. at the end of the job descriptions list other areas of work which may be of interest. Write jobs you are interested in, and related jobs, here. Example:

World of Work Building your career Step 7: On the left menu click on. Then click on. Then click on. Read this screen to help you think about how realistic your choice of the occupation is for you before you make your plans. Do you see any problems with your choice? List any concerns. Example: Do you need an IELTS score to get into a training course that might be a requirement? Are there any licences needed? Is the industry in a negative growth period (are there less jobs)?

World of Work Building your career Step 8: What type of job are you interested in? On the left menu click on. Look at a particular job of interest on the website. Write out the tasks and personal requirements below to see if your skills and interests match with this type of work. Example: Ask yourself: Do you have the right personal requirements for the job?

World of Work Building your career Step 8 continued… Under the heading at the bottom of the page, click on to see what you may need to obtain work in Victoria. eg permanent residency. Write out the education and training notes. Also write down any additional information that is important for this occupation. Example: What is an apprenticeship? For more information, look at some real job ads in this field

World of Work Search jobs in your preferred field Step 9: To read some real job ads to see common skills and requirements, look at the websites : Seek ( or CareerOne ( Search for your particular job. Look at the skills needed in the job. List the skills needed to get this type of job. List the jobs you have researched on these employment websites.

World of Work Skill gaps Step 10: Write any skills gaps you have identified for your choice of occupation, from the list in the JobGuide and from jobs available on internet sites such as Seek or CareerOne? Step 11: Match the skills you can transfer from your previous job to your new job choice.
