Life

Content Standard LS1A  Know cells are the basic unit of life  Describe life functions performed by cells and living organisms

Life Functions MRS GREN  M: Movement  R: Respiration  S: Stimulus-Response  G: Growth and Development  R: Reproduction  E: Excrete Waste  N: (obtain) Nutrients

Movement All living organisms move to: Find shelter, a mate, food, etc Escape from predators and other danger Circulate materials in their bodies/cells Change the amount of light they get (plants) Movement in plant cells

Respiration Using food energy to make other types of energy. Takes place in the cells of a living organism.

Stimulus-Response All organisms respond to their environment.

Growth and Development All organisms grow from a baby to an adult. (get bigger) Organisms also develop (example: going through puberty)

Reproduction Making more of ourselves

Excrete Waste Getting rid of the waste products produced by chemical reactions in our bodies. We do this by breathing out carbon dioxide, producing sweat, urine and feces.

(obtain) Nutrients We need materials for:  Growth  Repair  Energy

How do you know “it”s alive? In order to be considered living – the organism must have the ability to carry out ALL 7 life functions.

Dead, Alive or Non-living?
