Other Environments Chapter 17

Mail Order Pharmacy Mail order pharmacy is the fastest growing segment of pharmacy. Mail order pharmacy is used for maintenance medications for chronic therapy. Maintenance Medication – medication required on a continuous basis for treatment of a continuing condition.

Mail Order Pharmacy Mail Order pharmacy must follow Federal and State requirements in processing prescriptions. Mail Order is not necessarily required to be licensed in every state they mail Rxs to. Mail order pharmacies are generally very large operations that are highly automated.

Mail Order Pharmacy Pharmacists must review prescriptions just as in other pharmacy practices. Mail Order must provide an opportunity for counseling—usually this is provided by a help desk or customer service phone number.

Home Infusion Home care agencies – home nursing care businesses that provide a range of health care services to patients at home. Home care is supervised by a registered nurse (RN) who works with a physician, pharmacist & other health care providers to administer a care plan that involves the patient and/or other care givers.

Home Infusion The fastest growing segment of home care is home infusion. Home Infusion Pharmacies specialize in preparing admixtures, and infusion pumps, and specialize in various aspects of a patient’s care plan. The same rules apply in preparing admixtures in home infusion as do in hospital pharmacy.

Home Infusion The primary therapies provided by home infusion services are: –Antibiotic therapy –Parenteral nutrition therapy –Pain Management –Chemotherapy A fundamental activity of home infusion is patient education about their therapy: –How to self-administer –Monitor –Report problems
