STARTER What do all of these have in common and what is the collective name for them all?

OBJECTIVES To be able to name types of secondary storage. Know the advantages and disadvantages to at least three secondary storage types. Evaluate and discuss the best device for a specific purpose.

WHAT IS SECONDARY STORAGE? Secondary storage is an additional storage facility added to a computer system to store data and programs when the power is switched off. Why? ROM cannot store additional programs. RAM loses its memory once the power is switched off.

MAIN TYPES Magnetic Hard Disk Drive Solid State Hard Disk Drive USB Memory Stick Flash/SD Card Optical Storage To be able to name types of secondary storage. Know the advantages and disadvantages to at least three secondary storage types.

TASK ONE – SECONDARY STORAGE You will need to choose two types of secondary storage and will need to fill out the template as shown below. Your teacher will assign you a number and you will need to use the Internet and Textbook to complete the tables. Type and Background information A drawing of the Secondary Storage Type AdvantagesDisadvantages

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES GroupSecondary Storage Items OneMagnetic HDD and SD Card TwoSolid State HDD and Optical Storage ThreeUSB Memory Stick and Magnetic HDD FourSD Card and Solid State HDD FiveOptical Storage and USB Memory Stick We have more work then this to do today so work quickly and quietly. You have about 25 minutes to fill in your two tables. You need at least four advantages and disadvantages for each.

MINI PLENARY Together we will now complete a third and final template for “Cloud Storage” – You will not find this one in the book so you will be required to think. You will be asked to provide answers so be ready! 5 Mins to think and discuss. To be able to name types of secondary storage. Know the advantages and disadvantages to at least three secondary storage types.

OBJECTIVES To be able to name types of secondary storage. Know the advantages and disadvantages to at least three secondary storage types. Evaluate and discuss the best device for a specific purpose.

QUESTION Steve is a DJ and will select the music he wants to play and transfer it to a storage medium, which he will take to the club. Which will be the best storage medium for him to use and why? Evaluate and discuss the best device for a specific purpose.

PLENARY - CATCHPHRASE You teacher will now put you into teams and ask you Secondary Storage related questions – Get a question right and a square will be revealed – Can you win points for your team by guessing the mystery device.
