ORGANIZATIONS DEALING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Digitalised Modules on Enviromental Education

WWF WWF is the world’s largest and most experienced indipendent organization, which addresses issues from the survival of species and habitats to climate change, sustainable business and environmental education. Born in 1961, WWF has grown into a truly global network, working in more than 90 countries and depending upon its 5 million supporters worldwide. WWF’s Mission is to stop the degradation of the Planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with Nature, by: conserving the world’s biological diversity ensuring that the use of renewable resources is sustainable promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. To guide WWF in its task of achieving the mission, the following principles have been adopted:

be independent, multicultural and non party political seek dialogue and avoid unnecessary confrontation build concrete conservation solutions through a combination of field based projects, policy initiatives, capacity buildings and education work involve local communities and indigenous people in the planning and execution of its field programmes, respecting their cultural and economic needs

As part of the international WWF network WWF Italy addresses global threats to people and nature such as climate change, the peril to endangered species and habitats and the unsustainable consumptions of the world’s natural resources. WWF Italy strives to build partnerships with other organizations, governments, business ad local communities to enhance effectiveness of its work and it uses the best available scientific information to address issues and critically evaluate all its endeavours.

The Italian Association is a charity and Non Governmental Organization (NGO).In Italy, WWF was founded in Today it has more than members, and has become the biggest environmental association of our country. WWF is present in Italy through two national offices (Rome and Milan), a network of 19 regional offices, many local divisions. It works with a large number of volunteers and organises nation-wide campaigns to save and protect endangered Italian species, in particular the wolf, the otter, cetaceans (dolphins), the bear.

LEGAMBIENTE Legambiente is the most widespread environmental NGO in Italy, with 30 years of history, 20 regional branches, in excess of 1,000 local groups and 115,000 members throughout the country. Legambiente is an association of free citizens fighting for an improvement in the quality of life and the environment and guaranteeing health to the entire collectivity; Legambiente is fighting for a different world, a happier place and with greater equality.

Legambiente is committed, day after day, in fighting against climate change, pollution, unauthorized building and has been successful in getting the so-called "eco-monsters" torn down; Legambiente has paved the way in Italy towards strong and combative environmental voluntary work.

Legambiente promotes energy- friendly lifestyles: the use of renewable energies, efficient and sustainable buildings, low emission mobility systems and OGM-free food and agriculture. Moreover Legambiente collaborates with schools on environmental educational programmes and provides an opportunity for participation to thousands of students and teachers.

Legambiente gives updated information on environmental issues to all its members with the magazine ‘La Nuova Ecologia’. With cooperative projects in developing countries, Legambiente fights for a world where people and communities really are the leading players of the future. Legambiente gives moreover lots of practical information on how to save money and reduce the environmental impact of our daily actions in the home and work environments, and leisure time.

GREENPEACE Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action. Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace by: Catalysing an energy revolution to address the number one threat facing our planet: climate change. Defending our oceans by challenging wasteful and destructive fishing, and creating a global network of marine reserves. Protecting the world's ancient forests and the animals, plants and people that depend on them. Working for disarmament and peace by tackling the causes of conflict and calling for the elimination of all nuclear weapons. Creating a toxic free future with safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals in today's products and manufacturing. Campaigning for sustainable agriculture by rejecting genetically engineered organisms, protecting biodiversity and encouraging socially responsible farming.

Greenpeace is present in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants. Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971 when a small boat of volunteers and journalists sailed into Amchitka, an area north of Alaska where the US Government was conducting underground nuclear tests. This tradition of 'bearing witness' in a non-violent manner continues today, and our ships are an important part of all our campaign work. Greenpeace exists to expose environmental criminals, and to challenge government and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate to safeguard our environment and our future.

FAI The Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI) is the National Trust of Italy.

The organisation was established in 1975 on the model of the British National Trust. It is a private non- profit organisation and has 60,000 members as of early Its purpose is to protect elements of Italy's physical heritage which might otherwise be lost. To give the association our own time is crucial for the growing of the Foundation: without it the organization couldn’t esist. There are some wonderful assets, it is true, but all people working for it, make sure that members may enjoy themselves seeing discovered and restored treasures of Italy.
