notes Cell parts + energy transfer

Review of Each Station Cell Parts and Energy Transfer

Station 1: Plant vs. Animal Cells Plant cells: 1.Will have a shape (rectangle) 2.Will usually be green dots 3.Will have thick outline 4.Will have vacuole – looks like bubble Animal cells: 1.More circular 2.Dark center/nucleus

Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm

Chlorplast Cell Wall Vacuole

Energy Transfer in Organisms (stations 2-5) Photosynthesis: Process/Chemical Reaction of taking Sunlight and converting it to Glucose Occurs in Chloroplast Autotrophs Respiration: Process/Chemical Reaction of taking Glucose and Converting it to ATP (Useable energy) Occurs in Mitochondria Autotrophs and Heterotrophs

Station 2: Photosynthesis Activity Jar 1: No organisms left in normal light Jar 2: Elodea – left in darkJar 3: Elodea – left in light Jar 4: Elodea + Snail – left in light Jar 5: Elodea + snail – left in dark Chemical(s) in Solution (Oxygen or Carbon Dioxide)? Blue = O2 Yellow = CO2 Blue = O2 Green = O2 + CO2 Yellow = CO2 What Chemical Process(es) occurred? NA Respiration Photosynthesis Photosynthesis + Respiration Respiration

Station 3: Respiration Activity Number of clothespin “closes” in consecutive 30-second cycles Name Cycle 1Cycle 2Cycle 3Cycle 4Cycle 5Cycle 6Cycle 7Cycle 8Cycle 9Cycle 10 1.How do your data help illustrate anaerobic respiration at work in human muscle cells? Start: Much energy (34 ATP!) in respiration Little later: Overwork  not enough Oxygen  fermentation so less energy (2 ATP) Later still: Fermentation still occurring  build up of lactic acid  it hurts! “Muscle Fatigue” 2.After a 10-minute rest, your muscles would probably recover enough to operate at their original efficiency. Explain why. Enough Oxygen for Respiration (ATP!) No need for Fermentation

Station 4: Photosynthesis and Respiration Equations Photosynthesis Reactant Side: #Carbon: 6 #Oxygen: 18 #Hydrogen: 12 Product Side: arrow points to #Carbon: 6 #Oxygen: 18 #Hydrogen: 12 Full Equation: Respiration Reactant Side: #Carbon: 6 #Oxygen: 18 #Hydrogen: 12 Product Side: arrow points to #Carbon: 6 #Oxygen: 18 #Hydrogen: 12 Full Equation: Law of Conservation Products come from Reactants Coefficients

Station 5: Photosynthesis and Respiration Pictures 1.Show/Draw Respiration occurring by showing the reactants going into the Heterotroph and products coming out. Also to make sure to show the Autotroph going through Respiration at night 2.Do The same for Photosynthesis, but showing the Reactants going into the Autotroph and the products coming out. All living organisms MUST turn glucose (potential energy) into ATP (usable energy).
