Presentation transcript:

Natural Resources, Climate Change and Religious views…

Learning intentions…  Understand why natural resources are under pressure, explore their use and abuse  Consider the debate about Climate change and explore religious views and the work being done to conserve the planet

Population explosion…  What pattern do you see?  How can we change this?  What is the importance of population control?  What would you recommend?

Natural resources  Non-renewable natural resources = Oil, coal and gas (fossil fuels)  The population explosion is stretching the world’s natural resources  We now need to use renewable energy sources such as wind, wave and solar.  Nuclear power is another option – cleaner pollution but can give off dangerous radiation Task choice 1: Write an advert to encourage people to use renewable energy Task choice 2: Using the terms underlined, create a debate between two people on which energy source is best for the planet and people and give reasons Task choice 3: Write down the definitions for all of the words underlined with images

Climate change  The climate (earth) is getting warmer  This can result in severe weather like droughts and floods and then famine  However some say there is no proof that weather conditions are caused by global warming Q1: What is climate change? Q2: What are its effects? Q3: Why is this a problem?

Looking after the world…  Conservation = look after the environment and protect animals  Earth Summit = a meeting of different countries including religious representatives. The first in 1992 discussed pollution, deforestation and lack of water.  1997 = countries promised to cut CO2 and other gas emissions.  2002 = the poor and clean water  All religions say this is important, it is a sign of sinfulness and greed to use the earth’s resources. It is not good stewardship.

Homework… 1.Calculate your own carbon footprint by going onto and search for ACT ON CO Research a conservation project such as Kew Gardens or the Eden Project. ALL MUST: Revise ‘moodle’. All lessons available and see past paper ‘religion and planet earth’ questions.

Debate…  ‘Rich countries have no right to tell poor countries to stop their carbon emissions’. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answers.
