How do you feel today?

Why do we need to talk about this?! What do you think?

A. The medical name for the process of changing from a child to an adult. B. The period of life during which an individual becomes capable of reproduction. C. Puberty comes from the Latin word “pubescere” which means “to be covered with hair.” D. PEW-burr-tee is a time when young people start to smell, causing others to plug their nose and say, “PEW!”

 Hormones are chemicals that control certain body processes.  Testosterone is a hormone that causes body changes to occur in boys.

 Puberty usually begins between ages 9-15  Increase in height  Shoulders broaden  Muscle mass increases  Voice changes  Growth of body hair

 Appearance of facial hair  Breast buds  Reproductive organs increase in size  Production of sperm  Mood swings

 Different parts of the body grow at different rates  Hands and feet reach full size first  Legs, arms and trunk are growing too. (Scoliosis checks important)  Be patient with yourself, individuals grow at different rates  You’re going to have an adult body soon

 The hormone testosterone causes the shoulders to broaden and muscles to increase.  Do not use anabolic steroids  Work out to make muscles stronger.

 The voice box is growing.  The vocal cords become longer and thicker.  Voice cracks and squeaks but it is only temporary!

 Hair grows over the pubic area  Hair grows under the armpits  Hair on arms and legs grows thicker and darker  Facial hair starts to grow (age 14-16) Grows on upper lip first

19 Oil and Sweat Glands  New glands producing oil and sweat  About the same time as underarm hair  Need to use good personal hygiene habits  Zits or acne are the Pits..  Keep your skin clean, try over the counter products……if serious see your doctor  Never scratch or touch your pimples  Can cause an infection or scars

21 Mood Swings  Feel topsy-turvy, you feel very happy and then suddenly, not feel so happy  Hormones affect the emotions  Knowing what to expect will help you cope  Ask for help and information  Seek professional help

 When a boy reaches puberty, he will start to produce sperm for the first time.  Sperm are produced in the testicles.  When sperm leave the body, they combine with fluid from the seminal vesicle and prostate gland in a fluid called semen.

 The penis fills with blood and becomes hard.  Involuntary erections happen during puberty. It is normal.  Erections are not as noticeable as you think.  It will go away of its own accord.

 The passage of semen from the penis.  Does not contain any urine.  Nocturnal emissions are a normal part of growing up.

 Reproductive organs increase in size.  Athletic support necessary for some activities  Protective cup provides protection.  Sold in sporting goods stores/drug stores  Launder them often to prevent infection

 Jockstraps  Keeps the testes and penis close to the body so they don’t move.

 Placed in the athletic supporter for protection.  Use when playing baseball, football, and hockey
