Short summary of ATLAS week

Really a lot has happened since the last ATLAS Plenary in Paris! Giant steps in the detector hardware construction, assembly, integration, installation and commissioning, will be reported mainly this afternoon and tomorrow, there is obviously no point to preview this here … But there are also remaining and new challenges which have been faced, or which will still have to be faced, as it will become evident from the presentations So we are close, but not yet there! Just two nice examples: pictures from the pit on 8 th November 2005, and from SR1 on 17 th February 2006 …

End Cap Calorimeters C Various transports in November, with no problems Lowering down of the Tiles lower part and assembly of the 24 modules Lowering down of the LAr and final alignment on the tile Assembly of the Tiles cylinder, finished 1st February, perfect shape

Overall Schedule Challenge short term:  define the final time window for the Solenoid B-map (Enc Cap Calos)  schedule BT test  be ready for June ID barrel installation (ID services)  start BW-C assembly  cable calo end caps medium term:  define ECT scenario  finish barrel muon  optimize ID end cap installation/commissioning  define BW-A scenario  define pixel installation scenario (from Marzio Nessi)

Barrel Muon Next Future 4 main issues to solve : – finish to install the sectors where a few chambers have been left out for various reasons – install final access platforms for easy access during commissioning – bring services to the installed chambers – get installation to nominal speed (chambers availability has to follow)

It’s a challenge but getting there

Inner Detector: highlights and concerns Some problems (of leaks) found and solved in TRT and SCT, overall progress is good and integration continues. Problem with pixel stave pipe corrosion confirms schedule impact. Services installation still on critical path. Concerns in Oct. and now: –TRT Noise issues –SCT Low Mass Tapes (LMT) EndCap schedule –Pixel Stave cooling pipe corrosion –IDGEN Service installation –TRT –SCT –Pixel Stave cooling pipe corrosion –IDGEN Service installation

Readiness for installation (2/2) End cap C - cont Fully commissioned31 December 06 ID end plate installed and services laid acrossMid Jan 07 End cap A SCT EC-A at CERN (2-4 weeks contingency)1 May 06 TRT ready for integration5 June 06 SCT ready for integration14 August 06 EC-A 7.09 RFI5 August 06 Ready for installation (assuming same tests as for EC-C – must be reduced) 27 November 06 Fully commissioned (allow 12 weeks)End Feb 07 ID end plate installed and services laid acrossMid March 07 Pixels Ready for installation (retain 7.09 RFI date)13 Feb 07

Two major commissioning events in the coming weeks Liquid argon in the UX15 cavern Cool down and filling of the LAr Barrel Beginning of the Magnet system tests (from Olga Beltramello)

Commissioning Milestones for 2006 Date in ‘06TileCalLAr Feb.First combined Tile + MDT Now  Barrel Phase 1 AprCombined LAr + TileCal barrel expert week (DAQ, noise) Apr.Phase 2 + Field Map May/JuneTile + Muons + BT field on May/June  Dec Phase 2-3: Barrel cosmic runs (LAr barrel cold) June/JulyCombined extended barrel expert week (DAQ, noise) Sept./Oct.Endcap C cold Nov.  Phase 2-3: Endcap C cosmic runs Nov.Endcap A cold Jan. ’07  Phase 2-3: Endcap A cosmic runs

February ’06: First Combined Run in UX15: TileCal + MDT Sector 13 (bottom of detector) instrumented for TileCal + MDT Triggered by pair of scintillators below MDT Online success: read out 2 subdetectors as one DAQ partition Offline success: reconstructed combined events offline with Athena, event display with Atlantis Both subdetectors seeing muons, still need to prove they are the same muons Run again when possible, also using TileCal trigger Pedestal Signal D.Lawlor TileCal Tower Energy (GeV)

Basically: - use only official data sets, algorithms and tools - make sure that other people can repeat your analysis - rules on MC sets: only official validated samples - approval procedure, Analysis Reviewers - confidentiality of information

End of 2006: prove physics readiness for ~100 pb -1 in 2007
