What’s the difference?
Websites Written by anyone Content is not necessarily reviewed Don’t have complete citation info Aren’t organized to support a student’s research May not indicate when they’re updated ‘It’s the wild, wild west.’‘It’s the wild, wild west.’
Library Databases Get their information from professionals or experts in the field. Contain published works where facts are checked. Easy to cite in a bibliography and may create the citation for you. Can help you narrow your topic or suggest related subjects. Updated frequently and include the date of publication. Ebooks – personal & institutional Digital files Sometimes exact copies with photos, etc. May be downloadable – like Nook, Kindle, iBook files One copy or simultaneous access? Often hosted on publisher platforms Can be more expensive At most AACPS schools AACPS still investigating system-wide fiction platform
Why not? Advantages FAST!!!! Wikipedia (surprisingly reliable) What kids do at home & on a cell/tablet Current info can be found after a bit… Disadvantages (think: instruction) Content sometimes objectionable Not teaching research skills currency, authoritativeness, etc. Ads proliferate
