Vietnam, but he was brutal especially toward the Buddhist so when S. Vietnam wanted him dead the U.S. did not intervene.

 Gulf of Tonkin Incident 1964  Aug. 2 N. Vietnamese boats fired on U.S. destroyer off the coast of N Vietnam. LBJ used this to get the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed through Congress  Debate on Vietnam Hawks 1965  Believed in the domino theory, against appeasement, didn’t want LBJ to look soft on communism  Debate on Vietnam Dove 1965  Didn’t want U.S. troops fighting a guerrilla war, thought war was insignificant, though it would create a conflict with China & Soviet Union  First Troops in Vietnam March ,500 marines landed on Da Nang in South Vietnam. Their job was to defend the air base against the Viet Cong known as Operation Rolling Thunder.

Section 2: Hot, humid weather, insects, diseases, tropical vegetation. U.S. sprayed Agent Orange to kill the jungles They used guerrilla warfare, built tunnels to hide, and acted as Vietnamese peasants during the day but were Viet Cong at night.
