The Kurds Ben Ewing, Thomas Drosos

The History the of Kurds Kurdistan became an independent state but wasn’t identified as such by several countries. When Turkey identified themselves as an independent country, Kurdistan was practically absorbed by Turkey. the original kurds, who are sunni muslims, relocated to multiple countries around former Kurdistan afterwards. The major cause of conflict is the suppression of Kurdish culture. They have tried multiple times unsuccessfully to gain their independence to continue their ethnic practices but their rebellions have been crushed repeatedly.

Kurds alone in the fighting Kurdish people have been suppressed by their host countries and their rebellions have been crushed every time. The looked to the U.S. for help but they didn’t want to restart their recently ended conflict with iraq so they chose not to help. After their rebellion was crushed yet again, the U.S. did send troops to help protect them from further attacks. When Saddam Hussein was taken down the Kurds gained more independence but still not their own country.

Kurdish Timeline After WWI Kurds are divided among Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Kurds revolt creating KDP, Iraq quells revolt, this continues for some time Kurds of north Iraq sign peace treaty with Iraq, gained some self rule 1988 Iraq punishes Kurds for supporting iran in war, slaughters thousands of civilians 2003 Kurds help U.S. and U.K. in defeating Saddam Hussein, 4 Kurds are elected to iraqi governing council

Conflicts reflecting the 5 themes Movement- since the Kurds were scattered around, they moved into clusters in places like northern Iran, and eastern Turkey Place- the region where the Kurds are has been battered by war and they have felt the force of it from massacres of civilians to their own revolts which have been crushed

Possible Solutions to End Conflict 1: Gain help from outside forces to help revolt, all Kurds cluster together, and then create their own independent country and become fully autonomous. 2: Elect more Kurds to the government to make suppression of Kurdish culture eradicated and get them to be treated equally.

Questions 1.Where are the Kurds located? 2.Have the Kurds tried to gain their independence? 3.Why have the Kurds tried to revolt? 4.Was Kurdistan ever fully identified as an independant country? 5.Which of the 5 themes of Human Geography apply the most to the Kurdish conflict
