SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT PARA LOS NIÑOS APRIL 30, 2013 Transitioning to the Common Core

Remaining Questions Does the smarter balance assessment incorporate science and social studies?  NO What does the smarter balance assessment look like for kids with IEP’s and 504 plans?  “The assessments will address visual, auditory, and physical access barriers- allowing virtually all students to demonstrate what they know and can do” Is it worth investing time to teach testing skills such as eliminate answers, draw to visualize, etc?  What do we think? What sort of testing skills will need to be taught for the smarter balance assessment?  Let’s answer after we look at assessments

Remaining Questions Why does testing start at 3 rd grade? How do LA and ELA standards differ?  They don’t. They are one in the same. Are the sections still the same?  No. Performance task and summative assessment How are we going to support the informal text requirement with the books that we have?  K-3 teachers will receive $500 to purchase books (plus target grant of $700)  4-5 teachers will receive $1000 to purchase books Are the sections weighted the same? What percent of the score is performance based (i.e. free response)?

Smarter Balanced Assessments SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium, which includes 25 states

Summative vs. Formative Formative- the goal is to monitor student learning by providing ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning Summative- the goal is to evaluate student learning at the end of a period by comparing it against some standard or benchmark

Two Components of the Summative Assessment Performance Tasks  One reading task  One writing task  2 math tasks per year  Measure the ability to integrate knowledge and skills, as required in CCSS  Computer-delivered, during the final 12 weeks of the school year  Scored within 2 weeks

Two Components of the Summative Assessment End of the year adaptive assessment  A computer adaptive assessment given the final weeks of the school year  Multiple item types, scored by computer  Re-take option, as locally determined

Parts of a Performance Task Part 1: Student reads research sources and responds to prompts Part 2: Student plans, writes and revises his or her full essay or plans and delivers a speech Test Administration  Maximum time requirements for performance tasks grades minutes total (part 1: 35 minutes, part 2: 70 minutes)

End-of-Year Assessment Composed of approximately 40 to 65 questions per content area Uses adaptive delivery to provide maximally accurate scores across the full spectrum of student achievement and to increase student engagement Includes selected-response, technology-enhanced constructed response, and extended constructed response items Scores from items that can be scored immediately will be reported, and then updates as scores from those requiring human scoring or artificial intelligence are completed. A re-take option is available

Comprehensive Electronic Platform The system portal for information about the CCSS, SBAC, and assessment results:  Reporting suite with differentiated tools available to students, educators, parents, policymakers, with visualization tools.  Vetted instructional units and model curricula  Research-based instructional strategies and interventions  Issue focused chat rooms  Formative assessment items, released performance tasks and rubrics  Professional development modules and videos  Item development/scoring training modules and tools
