Metadata is simply, data about data. Several types of data and personal information can be saved in a Word document. This information might not be immediately visible when you view the document in Word, but it is possible for you and other people to view or retrieve the information. Metadata in Word

This might not be a good idea if it contains the authors name and information that the client is not privy to. Metadata in Word

Lets take a look at some types of information that can been viewed. Metadata in Word

I don’t think I want a client to see these properties, do you? Metadata in Word

It is a good idea to use the ‘Document Inspector’ built into Word on a copy of your original document, because it is not always possible to restore the data that the Document Inspector removes. Lets look at how to do this… Metadata in Word

In the copy of your original document, click the file tab, and then click Info. Metadata in Word

Click check for Issues, and then click Inspect Document. Metadata in Word

In the Document Inspector dialog box, select the check boxes to choose the types of hidden content that you want to be inspected. And then click inspect.. Metadata in Word

Review the results of the inspection in the Document Inspector dialog box. Metadata in Word

If you have decided to click ‘remove’, the offending data has now been removed. If you are not happy with the results you can always revert to your original copy. Metadata in Word
