Cell Organelles

*Review* Types of Cells Prokaryotic Bacteria Archaea Eukaryotic Plants Animals Fungi

*Review* Common Parts in All Cells Cell Membrane- Protective layer that covers the cell’s surface Cytoplasm- The fluid found inside a cell Organelles- Structures that perform specialized functions within a cell

Other Organelles in a Cell Nucleus, Ribosomes, Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), Mitochondria, Golgi Complex, Vesicles, Lysosomes Plants also contain Cell Walls, Vacuoles, and Chloroplasts

Nucleus Found only in Eukaryotic Cells Contains the cell’s DNA Control center of the cell

Ribosomes Organelle that makes proteins Smallest of all organelles More ribosomes than any other organelles

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) System of folded membranes Part of the internal delivery system of the cell Contains many tubes and passageways Substances move through the ER to different places in the cell

“ER”- People go through the ER to get to other places in the hospital!

Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell Organelle in which sugar is broken down to produce energy Cell uses the energy to do work

The “Mighty” Mitochondria! – Powerhouse! Cannot do work without energy!

Golgi Complex Organelle that helps make and package materials to be transported out of the cell or to other parts of the cell Packaged material is stored in a vesicle

Golgi Compl-EX….Fed-EX… Package and transport materials!

Vesicles A small cavity or sack that contains materials Created in the Golgi Complex Can move out of the cell or to other parts within the cell

Vesicles- created in Golgi Complex…contain materials and transports them where they need to go!

Lysosomes Cell organelles that contain digestive enzymes Digests food particles, gets rid of waste material, and protects the cell from foreign invaders Mainly in animal cells

Lysosomes- get rid of waste, protects cell from foreign invaders

Cell Wall – Plant Cell Only! A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane Gives support to the cell

Vacuole- Plant Cell Only! A type of vesicle found in plant cells Aid in digestion within the cell Stores water and other liquids which help to support the cell

Vacuole…Vacuums store objects too

Chloroplast- Plant Cell Only! Organelle found in plant cells in which photosynthesis takes place Uses the energy of sunlight to make food Are green in color

Animal Cell

Plant Cell
