Ethos, Pathos, Logos Forms of Rhetoric

Rhetoric The art of effective speaking or writing According to Aristotle, rhetoric is “the ability to see the available means of persuasion.” Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three main forms of rhetoric.

Ethos= Credibility Appeal to credibility Ethos persuades an audience based on the character, credibility, reputation of the author/writer/persuader.

Pathos= Emotion Appeal to emotion Pathos persuades an audience through appealing to their emotions, seeking to excite or arouse their interest.

Logos= Logic Appeal to logic Logos persuades an audience through using reason, logic, and rational explanations and evidence.

Night Rhetoric Elie Wiesel wrote Night based on his suffering during the Holocaust. Which pieces of rhetoric (logos, ethos, pathos) are used and why?

Night Literature Examples Ethos: Elie Wiesel uses his own credibility to persuade the readers of the realities of the Holocaust. Wiesel is also supported by famous people such as Oprah and Obama that further endorse the experiences in his novel. Pathos: The suffering and vivid details of death and tortue used in the novel elicit emotions from the reader. Logos: The numbers and statistics of the dead linked with the Holocaust are fuel for the logical side.

Speak Rhetoric Laurie Halse Anderson wrote Speak after her experience with sexual assault. Which pieces of rhetoric (logos, ethos, pathos) are used and why?

Speak Literature Examples Ethos: Laurie Halse Anderson was sexually assaulted. She was also in tune with the immense pressures her young daughter was going through in middle school. Both of these give her credibility for her novel. Pathos: The images of a sewn mouth, not being able to speak, tearing at lips until they are raw are all used to elicit emotions. Logos: N/A– We could pull in statistics of young people being raped/sexually assaulted, but not featured in the novel.

Label the following advertisements as rhetoric using ethos, pathos, or logos. Some pictures may be used more than one rhetoric.
