Scientific Method Design a controlled scientific investigation. - recognize steps appropriate for conducting a controlled investigation - construct explanations and conclusions from interpretations of data obtained during a controlled scientific investigation - classify by sequencing the steps of a controlled scientific investigation - summarize the steps in a controlled scientific investigation

CW: Scientific Method Note Worksheet

Scientific Method T-Chart Pose a Question Research Information Develop a Hypothesis Design an Experiment Conduct the Experiment Record Data Analyze Data (Organize and Interpret) State a Conclusion

Pose a Question Why won’t my cell phone turn on?

Research information Consult an expert user, review the user’s manual, research online

Develop a hypothesis I predict that my cell phone will not turn on because it is not charged.

Design an experiment Charge cell phone and test whether it turns on

Conduct experiment I plugged in my charger and connected it to my phone. Next I waited a few minutes then tried to power on the phone.

Record Data My cell phone did not turn on even after being charged 5 minutes.

Analyze Data Fill out a chart of what did or did not work.

State a Conclusion My hypothesis that my cell phone did not work because it needed to be charged was not supported because it did not power on after being plugged in to a charger. This experiment could be improved by testing the charger at different electrical outlets.

State a Conclusio n Further questions I now have based on this experiment include: – Is my cell phone not turning on because: the electricity powering the charger could not be working the charger could be malfunctioning the phone could be permanently damaged from water, over- heating, poor battery connection

CW: Forming Hypotheses and Designing Experiments

Exit Ticket: Design an experiment for the following below. (Do not have to copy) Problem: My plant is drooping toward the floor. Observation: My plant was tall and sturdy last week before I left on vacation. Hypothesis: If I water my plant 3 times a week, then it will be tall and sturdy. Experiment: (?)
