Presentation transcript:

 When heart disease is advanced, patients no longer improve with only medications. This is called Heart Failure and heart becomes weak.Heart Failure  This may be due to decreased blood supply to heart (coronary artery disease) or advanced valve problems. Then the only solution to such patients is Heart Transplantation.Heart Transplantation  Heart Transplantation (replacement of a damaged heart with a normally functioning heart) is done when heart function is severely decreased and it is expected that patient will not live long with ongoing treatment.  Heart Transplantation - where in the weak heart is removed and replaced by a healthy heart from another brain dead donor. Heart Transplantation What is Heart Transplantation?

 The heart is the hardest working muscle in the human body. Located almost in the center of the chest, the adult human heart is about the size of one’s fist.  At an average rate of 80 times a minute, the heart beats about 115,000 times in one day or 42 million times in a year.  During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 3 billion times, pumping an amount of blood that equals about 1 million barrels. Even when a person is at rest, the heart is continuously at work.  Heart Transplantation is a major heart surgery. It is considered for a patient with heart disease only when there is no other option to make him/her live longer with quality life and without it person is unlikely to live longer than a few months. Heart Transplantation Who Needs Heart Transplantation?

Normally when heart pumps, it will eject % blood in it. This is called ejection fraction. However many conditions can damage the heart muscle so that it ejects less and less. This will result in heart failure. Heart failure can be caused by:  Coronary Heart Disease.  Hereditary Conditions  Viral Infections of the Heart  Damaged Heart Valves and Muscles. (Alcohol, pregnancy, and certain medicines can damage the heart valves and muscles). Indications - Heart Transplantation

 Indian Parliament has passed Organ Transplant Bill in 1994 to legalize organ transplants in India.  First successful heart transplant in India, was done by Prof Venugopal on 3rd of August, 1994 at All India Institute of Medical sciences, New Delhi. In Tamilnadu, Dr. K.M.Cherian, Dr. K.R.Balakrishnan, Dr Girinadh T and in Kerala, Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram, are pursuing active heart transplantation programmes.  There are very few hospitals in India which performed heart transplants. Nearly 125 heart transplants are done in India so far. Heart Transplantation in India
