STEM is a Philosophy of problem solving
The request and push for STEM comes from industry and government
WHY STEM According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%. STEM degree holders have a higher income even in non-STEM careers. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics workers play a key role in the sustained growth and stability of the U.S. economy, and are a critical component to helping the U.S. win the future.
“To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM beyond what was considered acceptable.” National Science Foundation
METACOGNITION is a STEM component STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy.
MATH THE M IN STEM
Math is already a part of your curriculum and STEM is an easy transition It can be incorporated into daily activities and learning strategies STEM
Jo Handelsman, a microbiologist at Yale and one of the authors of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology’s report, Engage to Excel (2012), highlights the finding that “math was the single biggest barrier to training STEM majors.”
Teachers of mathematics need to go deep to introduce math sense. They need training,They need resources,They need lesson plans They need time and interaction to develop curricula that reflects math sense and engineering
Developing Math Sense National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
MATH is used in many aspects of our daily life
MATH in the classroom can be project based and application driven
STEM easily translates across the curriculum
Before a student can solve a problem They need to use thinking skills and thinking routines
Use thinking routines What am I trying to do? Understanding What do I already know ? Learning What should I use to solve the problem? Application
Architecture and Math
Use creative thinking, logic and empirical evidence to solve problems DaVinci STEM Activities DaVinci STEM Activities
Teaching Negative Exponents- needed for all areas of high school math and many science classes animation on exponents animation on exponents
Give students thinking skills and you create a future YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE EVERYDAY
Carnegie Mellon and MIT as well as other universities have many teacher resources. Academy/Robot Academy
Many teachers already use a problem solving approach when assigning projects NOW DO IT WHEN TEACHING DAILY
Ask students to STOP, THINK AND ANALYZE

Incorporating STEM is easy Use internet resources Utilize professional organizations Watch you tube videos Try entering a contest Government resources
