The training simulator Final Conference, Athens, Greece 16 September 2011

The Seislines Project – A review  FP5 Project -EESD  Quantitative assessment of the structural reliability of deteriorating water pipelines

The Seislines Project - objectives  Development of a Decision-Support System (DSS) to:  Assist water utilities identify seismic vulnerability of critical pipes  Advise the user on how to upgrade these pipes to remain in service following an earthquake  Answer exploratory questions regarding possible events or maintenance options

Scenario-Based Training  The training program will use real data taken from a medium-sized urban water distribution utility to train personnel.  The trainee will be able to examine the effects of different scenarios and  Get advice on the appropriate rehabilitation procedures in case of a major hazard such as an earthquake.

 The purpose of the PM4WAT training simulator in this project was to estimate the reliability of nodes (connections) of the piping structure for specified case studies.  The PM4WAT training simulator is not to represent accurately a specific water network.  The simulator is useful as a training tool with which the cause and effect relationships in a network can be investigated.  The material of the pipes is Asbestos Cement (AC)

 The tool offers sufficient flexibility to permit changes to the parameters, where these are known and it is left to the user to modify the default values in the database which have been taken from a medium sized municipality.  This flexibility permits investigation of scenarios for different operating conditions, mainly loads e.g. earthquake, frost, traffic etc. on the network.

 Two versions of the tool have been developed  GIS for the graphical representation of the water network and  Table lists to display the data in the database.  The GIS version has the drawback that it can only execute under the Windows XP environment while the second will execute on later version of Windows as well.

Improvements of the original user interface  ease of use – effective use with minimal training.  guidance – ease of commands for increased reliability and effectiveness.  error anticipation and prevention – error-messages to avoid disruption of operation.  integration - coherent environment for handling inter- module interaction.
