General Health Working Group North Lebanon Presentation Feb 2 nd 2012 Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Sub Working Group - MHPSS Activities-

General Updates on MHPSS sub working group  First meeting in January, members agreed to have meetings every 2- 3 weeks.  Members will partake in general health working group as the main platform for coordination with other sectors.  All members have contributed to the 4Ws matrix that maps out MHPSS services being provided to the Displaced Syrian Population.  The matrix will be updated regularly through the sub working groups regular meetings.  TOR draft will be shared with group members by next meeting (scheduled for February 15 th )  Mhpss.net, a global platform for connecting people, networks and organizations, for sharing resources and for building knowledge related to mental health and psychosocial support.

World Health Organization (WHO)  North Lebanon: Provision of a 6 day training on “Health Education and Disease Management for health care providers supporting displaced populations” covering: communicable diseases, NCD, mental health, reproductive health, and communication skills. Mental health covers: Mental health in crisis, stress, suicide, IASC, principles of counseling, stress relief for health providers, addiction, substance abuse, and identification of mental health disorders. (by February 27, 2012)  Finalization and testing of the mental health module (All of Lebanon)

Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF) Community focused (Target Population: Lebanese & Syrians) Information dissemination to the community at large  Messages on positive coping  Mental health awareness and promotion that leads to need to speak up groups Case Focused (Target Population: Lebanese & Syrians) Psychological intervention  Basic counseling for individuals + Basic counseling for groups or families + Psychotherapy( CBT) Clinical management of mental disorders by specialized mental health care providers  Pharmacological management of mental disorder by psychiatrics/psychologist  Action by community worker to identify and refer people with mental disorders and to follow up on them to ensure adherence to clinical treatment( as part of patient education) General  Training and orientation of Makased staff about mental health and creating a good referral system

UNICEF through Implementing Partner Save the Children-Sweden (SCS) Community focused:  Safe spaces for 700 Syrian and Lebanese children in the area of Wadi Khaled: 2 in public schools, 2 in shelters and 1 in a community based organization.  Training for teachers, social workers and community facilitators on how to manage recreational activities and integrate psychosocial support in these safe spaces. General:  Training for the outreach workers on the use of the Facts for Life book in their awareness sessions for parents and youth.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Community focused  Social workers and surveyors in Akkar SDCs trained on the delivery of psychosocial assistance with particular emphasis on children with special needs  A community centre for psychosocial activities for children with special needs established in Aamayer centre (Wadi Khaled) and run by the SDC staff under the supervision of IOM and MOSA.
