Introduction To discuss the role of language learning strategies which are supposed to facilitate the language learning process. Different students adopt different behaviours or strategies to learn a new language.

Introduction Nyikos and Oxford (1993, p.11) “learning begins with the learner”. Even with the best teachers and methods, students are the only ones who can actually do the learning like the proverbial horse led to water but which must do the drinking itself

Introduction

Research design / methodology Used administration of a structured self-report questionnaire. Taken Young Learners’ Language Strategy Use Survey by Rebecca L. Oxford and Andrew D. Cohen (2002) as my sample of questionnaire

Research design / methodology Advantages of using questionnaire: – Questionnaires reduce bias  uniform question presentation and no middle-man bias – Researcher's own opinions will not influence the respondent to answer questions  no verbal or visual clues – Respondents can complete the questionnaire at their own convenience , answer questions out of order, skip questions, take several sessions to answer the questions, and write in comments

Research design / methodology Advantages of using questionnaire: -More cost effective -Easy to analyse -Familiar to most people  everyone has had some experience completing questionnaires  do not make people apprehensive

Population and sampling Done at SMK (LKTP) Chini  FELDA school Two different forms - Form 2 Arif (3 boys and 2 girls)  also taking an extra subject (Arabic)  the best class; the best set - Form 5 Bestari (2 boys and 3 girls)  second best class  the best result in English subject (February Test)

60% Form 5 Bestari  the length of the passage (at least 350 words )  do a lot of skimming process  need to look for important facts (information transfer questions)  underlining, marking, highlighting (summary)  refer to the dictionary  a lot of guessing the meaning (examination)

60% Form 5 Bestari(cont)  to get samples of writing and essay  to enrich their vocabulary

40% Form 2 Arif  shorter reading materials  their concentration level is shorter (easily bored)  easy to comprehend passages(straight forward and easily perceived)  use less skimming process  reading for fun (comic style reading)

55% Form 5 Bestari  plan ahead about what they want to write  refer a lot to the dictionary  used a lot of idioms and proverbs  the length of writing (350 words)  lost of words, they will say it in the different way

45% Form 2 Arif  the length of writing (250 words)  topic that close to them (no outline beforehand)  checking with teacher.

60% Female  English songs (MP3 not radio station)  discussing lyric of the song  discussing the message underlying the lyric  listen attentively to the words  SMK (LKTP) Chini -school assembly on in English and Arabic = students applied into their writing

40% Male  less strategy while listening  feel that listening process is more to a passive process = required less interaction

70% Male  more strategy while speaking  favour interactive process  brave enough to speak the language  more open up to two native speaker instructors (FELDA scheme) = use broken English

30% Female  more self-conscious  afraid of making mistakes  favour listening to speaking

Implication (What can I learn from this research?) Based on the language learning strategies features by Oxford (1990: 9)  contributing to the main goal which is communicative competence =In order for the male students to communicate with the two native speakers instructors, they are willing to use words from Malay language to form broken English to have conversation with them.

Implication (What can I learn from this research?) Based on the language learning strategies features by Oxford (1990: 9)  problem oriented =Form 5 Bestari know that they must write a long essay for their writing task, they have plan beforehand the outlines for their first draft of essay and not to forget to include the idioms and proverbs to make their writing more interesting.

Implication (What can I learn from this research?) Based on the language learning strategies features by Oxford (1990: 9)  involve many aspects of the learners =From the data collected in this paper, it is shown that due to feeling self-conscious about making mistakes while conversing in English, female students are opting for listening rather than doing the speaking
