Impact of Salary Bonus in Environmental Engineering Yee-Shuan Lee* and Yuh-Shan Ho # Bibliometric Centre, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital  Funding 1 and “external funding” 2 are observed to increase research impact defined by publication output and citation frequency in Science Citation Index (SCI) and reliable evaluation method is urgently in need  Taiwan Government has encouraged scientific research by awarding outstand scientists with salary bonus granted by National Science Council (NSC)  Foreign evaluation board  Three classification: General, Excellent, and Outstanding as in 2002  Based closely on quantity and impact in SCI 3  We theorized that higher level of ward received, higher impact it should have  Analysis based on:  Environmental Engineering award receivers  Three levels of awards of 2000 (I)  Outstanding and Excellent Awards from 1991 to 2000 (II) Set I Institutional Analysis  57 recipients in environmental engineering in 2000  32% from private and 68% from public institute  National Cheng Kung University and National Sun Yat Sen University had the most number of recipients (6) RecipientCitationSelf-citationCPPCPP ex National Private National Institutes generally have higher citation impacts than private ones  Analysis Parameters:  categories analysis for set I  Journal, Institution and authorship for both set  Publication output and impact of each recipient in SCI for set II. Category and Authorship Analysis Set I  Papers were published:  36.8% in environmental engineering  71.9% in environmental science  28.1% in other disciplines  Authorship of recipients:  68.4% were the first and corresponding author  15.8% were neither authorship Set II  Authorship of recipients:  21% were the first and corresponding author Methodology  Theory was rejected  Results did not show any indication of significant contribution of the outstanding award receivers in SCI journals  Denoted failure of the purpose of the award 1.
