FYRIRLESTRAMARAÞON HR 2011 | RU LECTURE MARATHON 2011 Brynjar Karlsson School of Science and Engineering Engineering for the expectant mother Verkfræði á steypinum

THE TITLE Of what do fetuses dream? Do fetuses dream of embryonic sheep? –Do androids dream of electric sheep (Bladerunner) Understanding the uterus (Að skilja leg) Understanding women –(starting by the uterus) PAST TITLES OF PUBLIC TALKS Engineering for the expectant mother –Verkfræði á steypinum All my research for the past 20 years !

THE MOTIVATION Perinatal mortality (Burðarmálsdauði) –Death of a fetus/child after 22 weeks of pregnancy and – > 500 gr –before 1 week after birth. Perinatal mortality in Iceland –5,1/1000 (2008) lowest in the world ! Being born is the single most dangerous thing that most people will ever do?

THE MOTIVATION Lets find a comparison that we understand. –~8.0 deaths in traffic (2008) per people 510 perinatal deaths per births 8 traffic deaths per people 25 perinatal deaths in Iceland per year (~5000 births) 24 traffic deaths in Iceland (~ inhabitants) Risk of being born (one time) ~ Lifetime risk in traffic! Perinatal mortality in Iceland 5,1/1000 (2008) lowest in the world.

THE MOTIVATION ~6% of all births are premature (developed world) 30-50% of perinatal deaths are premature A significant % have suffered metabolically in utero. WHY DO THESE CHILDREN DIE? What to do –Better detection of premature labor –Better insight in to metabolic state of the fetus
