Chapter 1 Sections 1 and 2: Geography
Geography: the study of people, their environments, and resources. Geographers have developed five themes to help us think about geography 1.Location 2.Place 3.Interaction Between People and Their Environment 4.Movement 5.Region
The 5 Themes: Location Position on the Earth’s surface –Two types of location: relative & absolute
The 5 Themes: Place A geographic signature showing “what it’s like” in an area –Physical characteristics –Human characteristics
The 5 Themes: Interaction Between People and Their Environment Wherever people live, they interact with the environment –People adapt to their environment Examples? –People adapt the environment to suit their needs Examples?
The 5 Themes: Movement People, goods, ideas, and technologies move –People- Why have/do people migrate? –Goods- Why does trade occur? –Ideas- Move with people and goods What are the effects of movement?
The 5 Themes: Region An area linked by unifying characteristics –Physical characteristics Examples? –Cultural, political or economic characteristics Examples? –What regions is the US part of? Pakistan?
5 Themes of Marblehead Location: What is Marblehead’s absolute location? Relative location? Place: What are the physical and human characteristics of Marblehead? Human-Environmental Interaction: How have humans affected the environment in Marblehead? How does the environment affect the people of Marblehead? Movement: How do people, goods, and ideas travel to, from, and within Marblehead? Region: What region(s) is Marblehead a part of?
9/12 Do Now: Why do all maps distort the world in some way? Aim: How does one effectively use maps to understand geography? Objectives: You will be able to… Determine absolute location using latitude and longitude Differentiate varies types of map projections and maps Agenda: Chapter 1 Section 2 Review “Using Maps to Understand Geography” packet Homework: Read and take notes on Chapter 1 Section 3
Using Maps Maps helps us understand geography All map projections distort the Earth in some way and so each projection has its advantages and disadvantages –Mercator –Interrupted –Peters –Robinson
Mercator Projection Peters Projection Interrupted Projection
Types of Maps There are many types of maps that show different aspects of geography –Physical/topographic maps –Political maps –Population maps –Vegetation maps –Climate maps
Landforms Describe “place” Shown on physical/topographic maps Affect how people live
Climate The average weather of an area Describes “place” What affects climate? How does it affect people’s lives?
Tips on How to Read/Use a Map 1.Determine what type of map it is so you know what it is showing 2.Find the compass rose to determine direction and possibly location 3.Use context clues (title, compass, features of map) to determine what region is portrayed 4.Look at the key to determine scale and the symbols for features 5.Use scale key if you need to determine distance 6.Use latitude and longitude if you need to determine absolute location 7.Be observant
