Do Now Question: What are some of the conditions (types of weather, etc..) that can occur during a thunderstorm? CRO Format 1/28/15

“Pop Lab” Everyone must write their own steps: Write your question (Why does a plastic bag make a “pop” noise when it breaks?) Create your hypothesis Observe (One partner tries, while the other observes then switch so that both get a turn) Write your conclusion. Was your hypothesis correct? How does this relate to thunder? Write in CRO format all of your results.

Do Now Question: What causes static electricity? (Think about what happens when you rub your feet on carpet) CRO Format 1/29/15

Thunderhead Cloud A tall cloud created when updrafts (upward movements of air) cause a cloud to increase in height

Thunderhead Clouds (aka cumulonimbus clouds) Updrafts in a thunderstorm cause a cloud to increase in height (gets taller)

Thunderhead Clouds

Lightning and Thunder The three steps it takes to make a thunderstorm 1.Cold front moves in. 2.Thunderhead (aka cumulonimbus) cloud forms. 3.Rain falls.

Lightning and Thunder By your self: Read page With a partner complete numbers 4-8 on page 1 of your notes.

What are Thunderstorms? Thunderstorm is a rainstorm that includes lightning and thunder.

Lightning and Thunder Define lightning – It’s a spark caused when electricity that has built up in a thunderhead releases.

Lightning and Thunder Define thunder – It’s the sound of rapidly expanding air caused by a burst of heat.

Lightning and Thunder The “pop” of thunder is like the “pop” when we hear a balloon burst. Both are caused by the (rapid, slow) expansion of air. Lightning heats the air around it so much that the air expands (rapidly, slowly).

Do Now Question What causes lightning? (Think about what we learned yesterday) CRO Format 1/30/15

Do Now Question: How are thunder and lightning created? CRO Format (Try to answer this without your notes) 2/2/15
