Differentiate Between Occupation and Career. Occupation– a task or series of tasks that are performed to provide a good or service. Goal— something specific that you want to achieve. Career— a goal in life that is fulfilled through an occupation or series of occupations.

What is Career Planning? Career Planning— the process of studying careers, assessing yourself in terms of careers, and making decisions about a future career. Career planning requires investigation. You must find out: – Duties performed – Education and training required – Wages paid Where can you find information about possible careers? – School Libraries – School Career Resource Center – Government Employment Office – Internet

What Education is Available When Making a Career Decision? Additional educational options: – Two-year community colleges – Four-year colleges and universities both public and private – Private business schools—specialize in certain job training Costs of additional education: – Financial aid programs – Scholarships – Student loans – Work-study opportunities – Part-time work

How Do You Get Insight Into Work? Often times the best source to gather insight about a particular career is other people. Networking— talking to other people about their jobs. Career information interview— a planned discussion to find out about the work a person does in a specified career. (sample interview questions on pg ) Job shadowing— allows you to spend time with a worker for a day or a week to learn about a certain occupation.

How Do You Get Insight About Yourself? Each individual needs to access their certain needs and wants that influence their lives. Mobility— the willingness and ability of a person to move to where jobs are located. – Locational unemployment— occurs when jobs are available in one place but go unfilled because those who are qualified to fill those jobs live elsewhere and are not willing to relocate. Values— the things that are important to you in life. – Examples: Prestige Money Power Achievement

How Do You Get Insight About Yourself? Talent—a natural, inborn, aptitude to do certain things. Ability—the quality of being able to perform a mental or physical task. – Abilities can be developed. People should take extra courses that will help them in their weaker areas.

How Do You Make Career Decisions? Early career decisions can encourage you to become involved with organizations such as FBLA. Tentative career decision—a decision that is subject to change or modification as new information is received. – A tentative career decision will give you direction that is needed, and could open new interests.

What are the Steps in Making Career Decisions? Steps in making a career decision: 1.Gather as much information as you can. 2.Analyze what you have learned about careers and about yourself. 3.Think about different plans of action and what might happen if you follow each one. 4.Select what seems to be the best plan of action and follow it. 5.Evaluate your career decision from time to time.
