CA Standards CA Standards 7.6: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Europe.

Q. What is Medieval ? Medieval: A time period in history referring to the Middle Ages. This was a time that was old fashioned and not very “cool” at all

I. The Middle Ages are divided into 3 parts: Early Middle Ages High Middle Ages Late Middle Ages “We should explore this topic more clearly”

The Early Middle Ages These are dark times

A. This time period begins with the “fall” of the Roman Empire in the West in 476 AD

a. The Roman Empire had kept Europe together

b. Without the Roman Empire, Europe fell into chaos

c. Few people wanted to travel because of the bad roads

E. Trade decreased dramatically! (People went back to a bartering system ) Barter System: People trade one thing for another thing. (No use of dinero) “I’ll trade you this baby for some food!” “sweet”

F. Without Roman soldiers & government people to enforce the laws…

A power vacuum occurred

B. By the start of the High Middle Ages, life had begun to be more stable

a. Many separate European Kingdoms (such as England, France, the Papal States, and the Holy Roman Empire) had formed in the West

Label on your map: France, England, The Papal States, and the Holy Roman Empire

b. During the High Middle Ages, most people lived in the country

c. They lived under a social & political system called Feudalism ! “More about this later”

d. People relied on powerful kings to keep things together…

& the Roman Catholic Church

C. The Late Middle Ages saw trade between the west (Europe) and the east (Asia) increase

a. Because of this increase in trade, people moved from the country into towns
