Wider Hockey Context 65% increase in U16 club participation since 2011 (equivalent to 23,000 more junior club players) so demand will continue to increase at Universities Facilities and clubs increasingly at capacity Cost (time & money) of being involved in Uni club is high Students want Intra-Mural/Social products to be as “real” as possible International Hockey Federation trialling small-sided – including the Youth Olympics Hockey 5s 2015

Introducing SSHockey

Sport England funded project to April 2017 Hockey 5s and 6s Thirds of an Astro – 3 games at once Authentic 11s with attacking-focused twists Main focus is Intra-Mural/Participation level, and providing options for retaining hockey players in the sport and player development

Field of Play 5s or 6s; keepers or not; mixed or split Thirds of a pitch, 15m Danger Zone replaces the ‘D’ – zone rules the same as a ‘D’ Times are flexible to suit the institution 6/12/24min halves Generally recommend matches are less than half an hour ALL RULES CAN BE FLEXIBLE TO THE INSTITUTION!

Engagement Stats – 6s Two 11s Hockey matches = 150mins pitch time (allowing for stoppages and changeover) Maximum of 4 teams of 16, 64 players engaged One 6-a-side, third-pitch hockey match = 27 minutes 6 6s Hockey matches (2 sets of 3 games) = 60mins pitch time Maximum of 12 teams of 10 players, 120 players engaged 150mins = 15 SSHockey matches (5 sets of 3) 30 teams of 10, 300 players/playing opportunities Compared to 64 players for 4 teams of 16 So x4.7 increase in available playing opportunities

Pitch Layout Danger Zone

Rule Changes 1 Restarts – regardless of location on the pitch, all players must be 5m from the ball. Ball must move 5m in any direction before a shot can be taken Restart – Long Corner equivalent Attacking team starts in possession on scoring zone line, in line with where the ball went out of play. Ball must travel 5m before a shot can be taken, but can be taken straight in to scoring zone Penalty strokes replaced by penalty shuttle from half-way line All other players start behind the half-way line, and can only move once the attacking player enters the scoring zone. A keeper foul will result in a penalty flick. Short Corners are replaced with Challenges…

Rule Changes 2 – Challenges Penalty Corners are replaced with Challenges Attacking player starts with the ball 5m outside the Scoring Zone line. Defending team has a goalkeeper on the goal line OR, in 5s, a defender 3m inside the scoring zone One-on-one opportunity for the attacking side All other players from both sides start on the half-way line Open play as soon as the ball is moved Direction of Play

The Future of SSHockey July 2016’s BUCS Conference Looking to establish regional competition structures, where large universities cater for smaller neighbours, and how to facilitate this Pre-season – run one or two Premier level events like this year Freshers – have the format used as a foundation of club trials. BUCS-pointed Championship and Trophy competitions SSHockey to be played by 3000 students across 40 universities in the 2016/17 season
