S tatus During Great Depression -Still a colony of Britain (Along with the rest of the British west Indies) -Mainly a sugar producer -Sugar production dominated by large estate owners who exploited their workers -Fluctuating sugar prices made the islands economies unstable

S ugar Industry -Sugar prices collapse as a result of the depression -Labor strikes occur across the Caribbean -Caused by high income inequality and the depression -Many strikes turn into deadly riots -Large numbers of women plan and participate in the strikes -Strikes continue to the beginning of WWII

L abor Movement -Strikes caused by the depression give rise to influential labor movement -Labor movements advocate better wages and working conditions -Movements also advocate independence -Decolonisation begins after WWII
