CA State Standards The California State Standard that I will align to my ETP is Earth Science Standard 3d: “Students know that the amount of fresh water located in rivers, lakes, underground sources and glaciers is limited and that its availability can be extended by recycling and decreasing the use of water.” Investigation and Experimentation Standard 6: “Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations.”

Water is our most precious resource. The water available on Earth is the same water that has always been available. It might appear that there is plenty to go around. However, we have a limited amount of usable fresh water. The journey that water takes through the water cycle is a never ending journey. The phases of the water cycle are: PrecipitationEvaporationCondensation Lesson 1 - Why is Water Important to Us? Have students fill out the KWL Chart

Lesson 1 - New Vocabulary Lesson 1 - New Vocabulary Transpiration - When trees, bushes, and plants give off water though their leaves. Water Cycle - Cycle of water from gas to liquid or solid, as it goes from condensation to precipitation to runoff to evaporation. Percolation - When water sinks, seeps, or soaks into the ground. -Pass out the Vocabulary Puzzle -Do the Experiment & Investigation Components of the Water Cycle -Do Lesson 1 True & False Quiz

Lesson 2 Why Do We Need to Conserve Water? General Concept:  We cannot afford to take our water resources for granted.  Human activities have caused water quality problems.  When ground water becomes contaminated it can take years or decades for it to clean itself.  Human activities have caused a water shortage.  We need to conserve and save water.  We need to be aware of how much water we are wasting daily.

Lesson 2 - New Vocabulary Pollutant - Something that pollutes, especially a waste Material that contaminates air, soil, or water. Ecosystem - A system formed by the interaction of a Community of organisms with their environment. Waste - To destroy or consume gradually wear away. Sediment - The matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid. Pesticides- A chemical used to kill pests, especially insects. - Pass out the Vocabulary Puzzle - Give students the “Did You Know” Worksheet

Q. Why isn’t all fresh water usable? A.Some are not easy to get at. It May be frozen or trapped in soils Or bedrock fractures. Some water is too polluted to use. Q. Why do we need to take care of the Surface water or ground water? A.Water is very important for human To plant crops, and for animals. If we waste Water or pollute it, we many find that there Is less of it available for us to use. Lesson 2 Why Do We Conserve Water? Did You Know…?

Lesson 3 How Do We Conserve Water? General Concept:  Water conservation is very important to our human survival.  There are many reasons we need to save water and prevent Water pollution: We use water to drink, grow food, bath, clean, cook, etc.  Without clean water, many organisms would perish. - Read the book, Why Should I Save Water? By Jen Green - Then give students the 3-Day Water Diary

Lesson 3 How Do We Conserve Water Conservation Tips from San Jose Water Indoor: Repair all leaking plumbing fixtures Check that the water level in the toilet tank. Fill your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads and when looking for new appliances. Take showers instead of baths.

Pass out the Final Water Conservation Report Lesson 3 How Do We Conserve Water Conservation Tips from San Jose Water Outdoor: Use sprinkler systems according to the season, summer adjust for minimal use and in the winter, turn off system completely. While washing your car, make sure there is an automatic shut off valve. When planting, group plants together. Use drip systems for trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds. Water in the early morning or evening hours to avoid heat and evaporation of the day.

I pledge to save water, to treat it with care, never to waste it, I wouldn ’ t dare! I will not pollute it. I won ’ t hesitate to tell other people of water ’ s sad state. I pledge to conserve every drop that I can every day of the week. That is my plan! ts/Teaching_materials/Water_conservation_pledge.shtm Lesson 3 – How Do We Conserve Water Song “Water Conservation Pledge” (To the tune of “On Top of Old Smokey”)
