Moot question ‘Understand what education is for’ Point of view of New Zealand Asian population

Equipping New Zealanders to thrive in the Asian Century

Currently 12% of New Zealanders are of Asian descent. By 2026, 16% of New Zealanders will be of Asian descent. By 2038, 21% of New Zealanders will be of Asian descent.

Currently, 23% of Aucklanders are of Asian descent. By 2027, 27% of Aucklanders will be of Asian descent. By 2038, 33% of Aucklanders will be of Asian descent.

Perceptions of Asia 82% of New Zealanders think Asia is important 66% of New Zealanders say they know little or nothing about Asia The more non Asian New Zealanders mix with Asians the more confident they are with Asia – not learning this in institutions – but media/1:1

Perceptions of Asia Students learning Asian languages 29% drop Asia is not about New Zealand’s future – it is about its present New Zealand is too mercantilist – relationship is more than selling stuff My claim - “If your child is not learning about Asia now, their chance of future success in NZ is diminished"

Provides useful information for teachers and their students. Asian language learning support Advice and guidance on starting or enhancing your language learning programme. More support available – watch this space!

Support for schools Japan Study Grants $5000 grants available for schools to apply for who are planning a study tour of two weeks or more to Japan. $1000 grants available for individual secondary and undergraduate students to apply for who have been accepted on an exchange programme to Japan. Presentations Asia NZ Foundation staff are available to present at your school to a range of audiences including students, staff, Board of Trustees and at parent or community events. Experience Asia Events in Schools Guidance and support for organising a school event to increase your students knowledge and curiosity of Asian countries and cultures. Suitable workshop tutors and speakers sourced for the event as required.
