Back to School Night IB Biochemistry HL

Welcome to General BioChemistry with Brian Cox   Phone:  B.A. Wesleyan University (Biochemistry)  M.S. University of Oregon (Bioorganic Chemistry)  27 th year of high school teaching; 17 th year at Fairview  Back to School Night Sheet Available on Fairview website  Thank you for supporting our program by paying course lab fee

Biochemistry -1 semester course – required portion of IB Biology Curriculum (also helps with Advanced Placement Biology  1) Macromolecules (Emphasis on Protein Folding and structure)  2) Introduction to Metabolism (Enzymes, Thermodynamic and Kinetic Control of Metabolic pathways)  Cellular Respiration  Molecular Biology: Replication, Transcription, Translation, Regulation of Gene Expression  Biotechnology  This course provides 18 lab hours towards requirement of 60 lab hours required by IB for Higher Level Exam. Highlight labs include: isolation of pGlo protein, enzyme kinetics, bacterial transformation, PCR/ gel electrophoresis

Course goals include not just IB/AP exam preparation but also development of higher level critical thinking skills.  Science courses in most competitive universities emphasize problem solving and application of concepts to new situations  Successfully solving this type of application problem is different than recall or multiple choice requires practice to build confidence  Additional Course Goal: Practice application and critical thinking extensions in relatively low risk situations
