VISUAL STUDIES IN ART AND DESIGN: AN INTRODUCTION Dr Musdi Shanat GKL-1263 Visual Studies for Designers Semester 01 – 2015/2016

How do you learn visual studies? Students acquire a critical awareness of seeing, and seek the problems and possibilities for investigating, thinking, and writing about seeing in past and the 21st century.

Through the human desires to communicate, feel pleasure, and to influence others in the ways we learn and decide, we will look at how we use images to express ourselves, as well as looking at the way images function in society. How do we engage in looking?

The managing of visual studies (through visual, video, photography and diagram) is a tool of persuasive communication. April A file photo, a South Vietnamese woman mourns over the body of her husband, found with 47 others in a mass grave near Hue, Vietnam.

Visual studies allow you to analyze the process of looking. It is the way that looking practices are engaged in the symbolic & communicative activities. The visual studies is the impact of culturally active agents on us, that cause us to look, feel and act in a certain way.

Discovered new ways of understanding images Visual studies in part or whole relies on vision and is primarily presented or expressed with two dimensional images, it includes: signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, Industrial design, advertising, animation, colour and electronic resources.

This image is focused on the child’s pain. The child’s crying with terrier in his eyes. It being a photograph shows that it’s a real boy that is being abused. The reason why it is so close up is to focus on the child’s reaction to the verbal abuse. The visual is more effective. Reason being, the visual shows clearly the emotion in the little boy. As where the text doesn’t really get the main idea across.

This story inside a story tells the many motley adventures of Pippin, a boy who spends his days making many people’s lives a little bit brighter. The collection of Dutch designer Maaike Fransen delightfully finds its way from the AFW runway to the mind of a young boy hearing a story read aloud by his father on a rainy evening.
