5 Why was ‘Change the Story’ Developed?

Understanding the Gendered Drivers of Violence Against Women

1. Support for, or condoning of violence against women Actions that downplay, trivialise, excuse, or justify violence against women – at both personal and public levels. Examples include: Victim blaming- “Did you see what she was wearing….she was asking for it.” “What was a 14 year girl doing out at 3 am?” “Why did you wind him up, you know he’s got a short temper.”

2. Men’s control of decision making and limits to women’s independence in public and private life Examples include- Visibility of women in leadership positions- politics, sport, business shapes how we see & value women Of 400 ASX listed companies, CEOs and chairs are more likely to be called Peter (26), than be female (23) The gender pay gap between men & women currently 18.2%

3. Rigid gender roles and stereotyped constructions of masculinity and femininity Example: Redraw the balance

4. Male peer relations that emphasise aggression and disrespect towards women Examples: ‘Bro’s before Ho’s’ Who ‘wears the pants’ in the relationship? Objectification of women
