Initiatives on Resource Efficiency by Punjab PWD (B&R) Rakesh Garg Executive Engineer

Need of Resource Efficiency Ours is a resource intensive department. All works undertaken by PWD use natural resources. Some major natural resources being used by our department are: Bitumen Stone Metal Bricks Sand Soil

Do we need to Innovate? We are way behind our counter parts in rest of the world, rather rest of INDIA

Innovation Cell A Proposal To keep pace with technical advancements taking place in construction industry we need to continuously upgrade our knowledge. We need to have an innovation cell that should have liaison with the agencies like CRRI, IRC, TERI, PSCST etc. The cell should keep a watch on the new technologies coming up in the construction industry and assess their suitability to be introduced in Government Sector. The cell should be responsible to revise the CSR and Specifications for the newly introduced items and techniques.

Environment Safeguards Need of the hour We are the custodians of the Environment and we have a responsibility to safeguard it for future generations. We need to adopt such techniques in construction which are Resource Efficient, Environment Friendly or at least are not harmful to it. Research is taking place all over the World to find out ways to reduce negative impacts due to human activity

This Awareness Workshop is a step in that Direction- An Initiative taken by PWD

CLAY BRICKS: HISTORY

Clay Bricks are being used since long back. Bricks have gone through numerous changes in terms of their sizes, shapes, textures, manufacturing processes and materials. From un-burnt clay bricks to Perforated Bricks to Hollow Clay Blocks. From very small sized Nanak-shahi bricks to big blocks. Bricks made of Fly ash

Need to Introduce Perforated Clay Bricks and Fly ash Bricks Quality of conventional bricks manufactured with manual molding process has been deteriorating day by day. The size, shape, strength and texture are not uniform. Brick Kiln industry is facing huge labour problems and also these bricks consume more fuel.

Perforated Clay Bricks and Fly ash Bricks are more resource efficient. There is better control of size, shape and strength because of the mechanical production. Saving of Clay and fuel, which are in shortage. Consumption of cement mortar for joints is less. Consumption of cement plaster is less. Fly ash generated at thermals is utilized. Need to Introduce Perforated Clay Bricks and Fly ash Bricks

Introduction of Perforated Bricks in CSR As a first step towards introducing innovative techniques Perforated Bricks and Fly ash Bricks have been introduced in Common Schedule of Rates through A&C Slip no. 11 (Annexure X3)
