Successfully Completing GCSE Art

60% Coursework 40% Exam

Coursework Everything that the pupils do from the beginning of year 10 except the exam is coursework. It is therefore important that everything is completed to a high standard. A list of every task that the pupils have been asked to complete is available below. The pupils have been given three topics to study. These are Portraiture, the sculpture Andy Goldsworthy and Surrealism.

Exam The exam is actually an externally set project. The pupils choose one of seven topics from an exam paper given to them in February. Four weeks to prepare for the exam by researching their chosen topic and planning a final piece. The final piece must be completed in a maximum of 10 hours in school, over two days in March.

Assessment Objectives All of the pupil’s work is marked by the art staff at the school. The marks are awarded for satisfying four assessment objectives.

AO1 Drawing Observe and record ideas and information through drawing and writing. AO2 Artist research Analyse the work of artists that are relevant to the theme you are studying. An art analysis advice sheet is available on request with useful questions to answer when writing about a piece of art work. AO3 Develop ideas Develop and explore ideas in different material and using different techniques. AO4 Personal response Produce a finished piece of art work that is personal but is also influenced by your study of other artists.

Dates for your Diary Week beginning: 2nd February – Exam Introduced Exam Study Guide outlines what they should expect to do week by week. 9th Feb – week1 Half Term – pupils should use this time to get a head start on the exam prep. 23rd Feb – week 2 2nd March – week 3 9th March – week 4 16th March – Exam week – 2 full school days – deadline for exam prep. 23rd March – Finish off exam. Last hour and organising 30th march –3 school weeks to complete all coursework Easter holiday – Remaining coursework can still be added to over Easter. 5th May – Final Coursework deadline

Using the Art Department Facilities Outside of Lessons It is expected that work will be done at home as there simply is not enough time in lessons to complete everything. The art department is open after school and at lunchtimes for pupils to pop in and use the facilities and receive one to one advice.

Personal Work in Addition In addition to the set projects pupils may also submit any work that they have done off their own back during this time period. Pupils may add to their coursework by including any art related activities they please. This should be submitted along with everything else at the beginning of May.

The final Exhibition At the end of the course all of the pupils work is displayed as part of a final exhibition. Some work is then kept on display for the following year. Pupils should collect their art work from the November following their GCSEs.
