Botanic Garden We’re Going on a Bear Hunt A staffed educational visit to the Attenborough Arboretum Designed for Foundation Stage children We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is a day of active learning which looks closely at the Bear Hunt Story. After an introduction where the children are drawn in to feeling part of a magical story place to learn about stories together they consider the equipment needed to go on a bear hunt which they take turns to carry in a rucksack. Together we sing the bear hunt song and go to all the places mentioned in the book through the long grass, in the forest… finishing under the covers! After returning to the classroom for a snack the children set out in up to five small groups each led by at least one adult from school. They all visit each of the different places in the book to complete a different related art or literacy activity. This includes the opportunity to paddle in a small paddling pool to think of watery words so wellies are recommended. After lunch which can be eaten outside in warm weather or inside each group collates all the work they have done by sticking them on long pieces of paper to show their journey. They start by drawing around their feet and finish by drawing the bear cave. The day finishes under our special story tree with each group sharing their journey and then all signing and signing ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. Numbers: We have only one indoor classroom, so can only take one group at a time (maximum 30 children). Year groups can be accommodated by splitting them over separate days. Times: 9.30am (to depending on arrival time) until about 2.30 Cost: £4.25 per child, with no charge for adults. (Note the minimum charge is£102) Lunch: Can be eaten outside or in the classroom. Venue: Please note that this programme is at the Attenborough Arboretum off Carisbrooke Road, not at the Botanic Garden The Botanic Garden education programmes aim to promote the Garden and its satellite Arboretum as an educational resource, with an emphasis on bringing a global perspective to the National Curriculum, especially in environmental and development issues. We offer a range of Science, Maths, Citizenship, Art and Cross-curricular programmes.
