A partnership between the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield

What is a Doctoral Training Centre? 10 fully funded studentships per year; “Ph.D. plus”; 4 year course and funding; First Year: introduction to subject via taught programme; Years 2 – 4: choice of doctoral research project.

Why a Nuclear DTC? Nuclear is important to past and future UK Energy strategy; –Nuclear legacy cleanup (> 70 billion £, 100 years); –Geological disposal of radioactive waste; –New nuclear power stations; –International nuclear non-proliferation. But: national shortage of nuclear scientists.

Who are we looking for? We welcome applications from students who have or expect a good (first or upper second) in: Chemical or Physical Science; Earth or Environmental Science; An appropriate branch of engineering (e.g. nuclear, chemical….). If in doubt, please ask!

The First Year One term of taught material to introduce nuclear fission science, including: Nuclear physics; Radiochemistry; Radiation science; Radioactive waste management; Nuclear materials science; Nuclear reactors and fuel; Environmental radioactivity.

The First Year Masters level courses, but taught using innovative problem and enquiry based techniques. Professional and research skills training (including Radiation Protection Supervisor). Two taster research projects to prepare for Ph.D. Unique opportunity to “try out” a research area.

The Ph.D. project Devise your own PhD research project with your chosen supervisor(s): a unique opportunity. Free choice of all DTC academics in Universities of Manchester and Sheffield. Opportunities for secondments in industry and laboratories overseas.

The Ph.D. project Well resourced: funds for national and international conferences and meetings. Annual ‘Winter School’: specialists from UK and overseas. A very wide range of research projects in:  Schools of Chemistry and Materials, plus Nuclear Engineering (Manchester);  Departments of Engineering Materials and Civil Engineering (Sheffield).

Mg(OH) 2 colloids Nuclear fuel storage pond colloids Pu map across wasteform leached layer boundary [Pu(GeW 11 O 39 ) 2 ] 14- One of the few new UK Pu compounds in the last 30 years Uranium contamination from depleted uranium munitions Np binding site determined at ESRF Grenoble
