WISDOM Demonstrator End of project experiment to demonstrate optical security checking Hardware/software for TCP port checking Proposal –Use software defined patterns to check optics –Configure software to measure packet loss rate –Verifies optical subsystems –May be used for other security applications (e.g. DoS)

Block Diagram PC Control Definition of port addresses ‘Traffic’ generation 40Gb/s optical Packet generation Optical TCP Port match Optical memory optical packet switch Optical detector at packet rate Optical 40Gb/s data detector match No match Bit-level Payload verify Packet Loss rate measure Optical Detect for DoS Control/Firmware ns switch

Optical Packet Generation 10GHz RZ optical pulse source Optical Mux To 40GHz 40Gb/s modulator Electrical data from programmable pattern generator 10GHz RZ optical pulse source 10Gb/s modulator Optical Mux To 40Gb/s Electrical data may also be derived from IP tester (Smartbits/Ixia?)

Optical Packet Format Preamble to allow sync + framing ? TCP port address of comparable format to standard (# bytes ? Source + destination address ?) Stuff payload with PRBS for data and allow BER testing Guard bands of few ns to allow optical switch to isolate packets & headers Propose fixed packet length PreambleTCP Port #Payload # bytes tbd# bytes = x# bytes tbd Guard band ~ few ns Guard band ~ few ns

Optical TCP Port Match Select Preamble & TCP Port with ns optical switch ? Optical AND gate to select TCP Port bytes ? TCP Port bytes fed into UCC pattern match circuit –Possibly incorporating a second optical memory ? Payload acts as bit pattern for BER testing Optical delay (fibre) to delay payload relative to header PreambleTCP Port # # bytes tbd # bytes = x Guard band ~ few ns Guard band

For Discussion Issues –Packet lengths (fixed/variable) –Traffic generator or bit-pattern generator –Synchronisation assumed (may need to use clock recovery ?) –Option for before 40Gb/s ? –Option for testing at 160Gb/s
