Hook Obesity is ranked 2 nd among preventable causes of death

“Is fast food the main cause of Obesity?” By: Rafael Torres

Causes of Obesity Inactive Lifestyle – lack of exercise Unhealthy foods – oversized food portions Disease - bed ridden Environment – lack of sidewalks & safe places for recreation. Genetics – genes have a strong influence on a persons weight Medicines – slows the rate at which the body burns calories

Effects of Obesity Social discrimination, low self esteem, thoughts of suicide Denied from jobs Poor College Attendance Depression

Statistics Obesity rates among children in the U.S have doubled since 1980 & have tripled for adolescents 15% of children age 6-19 are considered overweight Over 60% of adults are overweight or obese More than 1/3 of the U.S is obese

Prevention Adolescents – role model Encourage physical activity Work to change eating habits & activity levels Purchase healthier foods De-emphasize body shape & weight Reduce screen time – television & computers

Transition Because I researched Obesity, I decided to design an obstacle course to show people that exercising can be enjoyable yet beneficial.

Product I designed an exercise course for my product. I wanted to show other people obesity can be prevented through exercising, a fun & beneficial way to lose weight.

Product Steps: Find a mentor Discuss options for product Designed an obstacle course Contact volunteers to perform the obstacle course Decide on a location where I can set up the course

Product Time management Getting people to follow through with coming out to participate in the course Finding a good location Weather Coach G’s schedule

Johnston united red year olds They really enjoyed my lesson plan and exercises. Always there Very obedient They put a lot of effort and helped me out a lot

Volunteers Ages Ran a lot more than the younger team Very intense workouts Workouts were a lot longer Very whiny

Mentor Thomas Gruhalla – a varsity boys and jv girls soccer coach here at Clayton High School. Over these few weeks after working with coach Gruhalla, he helped me to view obesity from a different perspective. He helped me gain the knowledge I needed in order to accomplish my product.

Challenges and Successes My biggest challenge throughout this project was time management I struggled with how to organize my product I succeeded with completing my website and project as a whole I succeeded in showing others a fun & beneficial way to exercise

What I learned I learned overall that time management can be difficult at times, so procrastination is not the right route to take. Obesity can be helped with the right attitude and mindset. I love to help and benefit others in a positive way

Thank you for your time! Do you have any questions?
