Female illiteracy in India is a crucial problem in today’s world. In order to fully understand this problem, it is important to see what is causing the illiteracy, the effects of it and what has been happening to solve this problem. The culture and economic causes of this problem, like gender biases and inadequate money lead to drastic effects such as female infanticide and a skewed sex-ratio. Sample Conclusion

The literacy rates of women in India are shocking. In 2006, the percentage of women that were literate was only 83.04% (World Bank). Women are a large part of the society that we live in today and having them educated is very important and crucial.

 The government must do a myriad of programs to improve literacy among females. Children are the future of the world, and half of those children are girls. In order for India to have a better future, it must educate all of its girls not only the ones who can afford it. The Ladli program for instance is a great example to motivate both the girls and the parents to send them to school.

 A massive amount of India’s population lives in poverty; the Ladli program encourages them to go to school. With government and many non-government organizations getting involved in improving female literacy, maybe one day that same girl will look up at that billboard, smile, read what it says, with the knowledge that she can be whatever she wants to be.

 Hannah is raped five times a day. Vaneet hung herself with her shawl. Peter has HIV/AIDS and Sanju died of tuberculosis. They all gave up on life a long time ago. The causes of child prostitution find their roots in extreme poverty, client sex preference and lack of education. In order to solve the problem of child trafficking for prostitution and allow children to have a childhood free of sexually transmitted diseases and psychological disturbance, law enforcement, widespread educational campaigns and better work opportunities are necessary.  As 25% of the population in India lives under the poverty line, poverty is one of the main causes of child prostitution. Client sex preferences coupled with the erroneous belief that having sex with a child heals all diseases and dysfunctions constitutes the second factor. The last cause is lack of awareness and education. Most trafficked children come from poor rural areas and are lured into the business by the prospect of a well paid job as a domestic in a rich family (Topi).

 The effects of prostitution on the children are immense, and range from serious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis to depression or phobias and the lack of a real childhood. Nonetheless, if the Indian laws are enforced rigorously, educational campaigns are held all over India and alternative sources of income are created for the poorest families, a great change can take place (Khan). The clock can spin backwards: Hannah has only just arrived at the brothel, Vaneet has not yet killed herself and both Peter and Sanju are still healthy. They all share a common strength: courage. Like the Greek Historian Thucydides said, “The secret of freedom is courage” (Thucydides).

 This little seed inside the four children is watered and nurtured by their knowing that at any moment the police or an organization will come to rescue them. Hannah, Vaneet, Peter and Sanju will stand up for themselves. They will say “no” and refuse to give in. They are the few out of the 1.2 million children that manage to do so, but not the last. They are free of the chains of slavery and their lives can be turned around. Hannah will have access to first class education, while Vaneet will grow up to be the chairperson in an organization fighting for human rights. Peter will harvest his talent in football and become an international star, while Sanju will follow his dream of writing books. All because someone decided it was time to stand up for those who do not have a voice and give them the right to a future.
