Perkins funding made a difference at our college by: 1.Paying for professional development for some of our instructors so that they can add industry-specific credentials, upgrade accreditation of their program, to their programs. 1.ICD 10 – Office Administration with Medical Emphasis 2.AWS – Welding 3.Clinical Simulation – Nursing 4.NLN Accreditation – Nursing 5.CREM Certification – Electrical 2.Enable us to leverage other funding (a grant) to purchase equipment to with changes made in programs: 1.Soldering Stations & Electronic Kits – EET 2.Wireless Printer for PLC Controllers, Print Server, and Adaptors – EET 3.Solar Panel Kits – EET 4.Digital/Analog Trainers, Rasperry Pi Starter Pack, and FPGA Board – EET 5.Pneumatic & Hydraulic Trainers – EET 6.True Reach-in w/Glass

Our college’s best practice using Perkins funds is: We have worked very hard to leverage funding sources to respond to business/industry standards. 1.BPT – has live project money from the operation of EduCable and we leverage that along with a large donation of furniture and equipment from an industry partner. 2.COS – the consortium purchased the software, Pivot Point, which allowed us to use a portion of our Perkins funding to update the software of another program, HVAC-R (Write Soft). COS used their live project funds to purchase Pivot Point for their new Manicuring/Nail Technology program. 3.EET – we leverage the purchase of equipment with a significant grant from Duke.

1. We strengthened the academic, career and technical skills of our students by: Expanding the requirement of CRC certifications in our technical programs Adding SkillsUSA exposure across our campus by taking advantage of a Total Participation Program (TPP) CIT students placed 1 st and 3 rd in IT CIT students placed 1 st and 2 nd in Networking Officers placed 1 st in Opening and Closing Ceremony BPT student placed 3 rd in Television (Video) Production WLD student placed 4 th Chapter received 100 Members Award, Growth Award, and Largest Post-Secondary Membership Award Adding equipment that gives our students exposure to newer technologies, trends, and standards.

2. We linked career and technical education at the secondary level with career and technical education at the postsecondary level: We developed Career & College Promise pathways that lead to diplomas or associate degrees at the college We provide guest speakers from the college to the high school technical classes We provide tours for various grade level students to increase their exposure to various technical, STEM, and advanced manufacturing careers We collaborated with our secondary partners, as well as business & industry to develop our NCWorks/Pathways to Prosperity pathway and are now collaborating to get it NCWorks Certified. Our early college started a SkillsUSA chapter a number of years ago and seeing the benefits it provided them, we joined this year. We provided professional development to secondary counselors in regards to career pathways available to their students.

3. We provided students with strong experience in, and understanding of all aspects of an industry by: We added a number of tours of local business/industry partners to certain classes in our technical fields (too many to list here). We joined SkillsUSA through a Total Participation Plan and our students participated in their first competitions this year. The fact that the judges are all business/industry representatives heavily influenced our decision to join. We added a number of business/industry-recognized credentials to various classes in various programs.

4. We developed, improved, or expanded the use of technology in career and technical education by: A number of our technical education instructors, along with their Division Chair, attended a Cengage-sponsored event on Distance Learning. Our Perkins funding paid for AVID training for our BPT instructors on this new industry-specific software. Our COS instructor received training on the new Pivot Point Software. Each semester we offer in-house training on Moodle and various related software. Our CIT instructor has been collaborating with an industry partner and it appears that all of her students will be hired by this company

5. We provided professional development by: We provided professional development for secondary counselors on career pathways. Our Distance Learning department provides training on Moodle and various related software such as the use of Kaltura & Respondus The Division Chair of Business & Technology and several of her instructors went to the Cengage-sponsored training on Distance Learning Our school is participating in Completion by Design and is in the process of sharing what they have learned with the rest of the campus.

6. We developed and implemented evaluations of our career and technical education programs by: We have a number of evaluations that we do to examine the quality of our technical education programs from various angles. We have a student evaluation of instruction which occurs at the end of each semester. We have an exit survey, which targets students graduating that semester. We do an annual survey of faculty and staff on their satisfaction with various aspects of the college Last year we began and continue with an annual data-driven evaluation of each program on campus to show number of students in that program and how many are retained from one semester to the next. We participate in the NCCCS re-alignment projects We are also implementing a rolling evaluation of programs to determine is they need changes

7. We Initiated, improved, expanded, and modernized quality career and technical education programs, including relevant technology by: We piloted a new program, Nurse Aide, SP16 in response to business/industry demand and secondary partners. We are evaluating at least two new programs, MOA, in response to feedback received from business/industry partner We have improved programs through the implementation of certifications within those programs (AWS, NATE, etc) We have expanded programs through the addition of classes and/or expansion of what is taught within classes in response to changes in business/industry (CREM, ICD-10) We have modernized programs through addition of industry-specific software (WriteSoft, etc.) and additional equipment (solar panels, etc.)

8. We provided services and activities that are of sufficient size, scope, and quality to be effective as evidenced by: Our programs meet this standard based on the framework established by the NCCCS system. We adhere to the curriculum standards for programs, the course descriptions within the common course library, and the requirements to the filing of programs of study. We are using this same guidance for services and activities beyond programs of study: Child Care Resource & Referral does not rely totally on our child development center as the only placement for dependent children. SCC Help Desk, Moodle Help Desk, and IT support are prepared to handle a volume of requests on a variety of topics Student Services has prepared for and plans a number of orientations to ensure all students have an opportunity to participate. Our SkillsUSA chapter was established as a TPP to enable all SCC CTE students to participate.

9. We provided activities to prepare special populations students who are enrolled in CTE courses by: Our WIOA department and financial aide departments work to provide funding for eligible students. Our foundation has worked collaboratively with us to provide funding for students going into programs before financial aide for those programs has been finalized as well as providing scholarships for students. We have a Child Career Resource & Referral Service to assist parents of young children with getting the child care they need We have a counselor assigned to work with students with disabilities to ensure they get the accommodations they need. We have an online SCC Help Desk to assist students with general questions, an online Moodle Help Desk to assist students with questions relating to Moodle, and technical support.

Closing Thoughts The monitoring visit help clarify what we were doing correctly and what needed improvement. Based on what we have learned, we are looking at a Perkins policy manual to guide our faculty and staff on permissables and non-permissables as well as to understand the purpose behind the Carl D. Perkins Act.
