What We’ll Be Studying Mostly American Literature: Who we are Where we’ve been How that applies to now

My Expectations For You: – Stay invested and respectful – Question your learning – Work hard

Get to Know Your Classmates Get into a circle Come up with: – A fact about yourself no one in this room knows – Best part of English class – Worst part of English class End

Do Now: Around the room there are five different texts Read each and for each, jot down: – What was it about? – What is it trying to do? – Does it resonate with you? You will have ten minutes for each Five Min.

Reflect 1. What text did you most agree with/resonated most with you/do you think everyone should read? Go to that place in the room. 2. When you arrive, find a seat and a place to write, and write a page of reflection about why you liked that one best.

Discuss With those who also picked that piece: Share your opinions Decide what about it made it stand out – Writing Style? – Point of View? – Genre? – Topic?

Your Homework Tonight: Print out a picture of yourself. Make sure it is no larger than half of an index card – Obviously, it must be appropriate for school To bring by Monday: – Manila folder/file folder for writing to keep in class – Flashdrive – Independent Reading Book – Highlighters/pens/pencils – Post-it notes – 3-ring binder with pockets (if without pockets, have hole- punched folder with pockets) – Journal (composition book sized)
