FlyAsh Project: FlyAsh Project: 06 November 2014

2016/06/242 Project Background As part of socio- economic development, Eskom intends to invest in FlyAsh project initiatives in all power stations around the Mpumalanga Province. 10 cooperatives will be identified in a pilot FlyAsh project at Majuba Power Station. Coarse-fly-ash is a waste material available in abundance from combustion of coal. Its composition includes a substantial amount of silicon dioxide (SiO2) both amorphous and crystalline and calcium oxide (CaO). Flyash is sometimes used as a cement supplement in the Portland cement production process. There are several types of coarse-fly-ash bricks whose composition is dependent on the fraction of fly-ash, cement used and the moulding type. A pilot project is identified at Majuba Power station. The South African Chemical Business Technology Incubator (Chemin) has been requested by Eskom Foundation to implement the commercialisation of coarse-fly-ash related businesses.

Project Background continue…. Chemin will utilise the following raw materials on site:  Course Ash: Chemin will utilise course ash generated from the power station. The ash will be picked up in a tipper before it is mixed with fly ash in the conveyor belts. Chemin will only collect the quantity that will be used as per the manufacturing cycle (batch per hour). This will eliminate the storage of course ash on site.  Fly Ash: Chemin will also utilise fly ash picked up from the Silos at the power station using a dedicated special tanker as outlined above. Only the quantity of fly ash that will be used on that specific cycle (batch per hour) will be collected. This will eliminate the storage of ash on site.  Cement: Chemin will procure and store cement on site using mini silos. This will eliminate the issues of dangerous or poisonous cement paper bags. In addition, this will eliminate waste generated on site.  Processed Water: Chemin intends to use the processed water available in the three dams. Chemin will collect the processed water from the three dams using a dedicated special water tanker to be procured. Only the quantity of water to be used per cycle will be collected to avoid water being stored in the tanker and on site.  Socio economic development will be established through this project at Eskom 2016/06/243
