GRAMMAR LESSON #1 Nouns, Noun Phrases and Pronouns

What is a noun? A noun is a person, place, a thing, or an idea.

Common Nouns A common noun names any one of a class of people, places, or things. These are things that your senses can detect. Examples are: writer, building, insect, fly, mothers

Proper Nouns A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. Examples are: Mother’s Day, Miss Holcombe, Redlands High School.

Abstract Nouns Abstract nouns are nouns that can’t be touched, tasted, seen, heard, or smelt. They usually represent ideas, feelings, or qualities. Examples are love, hate, violence, culture, success, hope.

Collective Nouns Collective nouns name groups of people or things. Examples are: swarm, committee, group, family, team, crowd, herd.

Compound Nouns A compound noun is a noun that is made up of more than one word. These can be words that are separated, hyphenated, or combined. Examples are: bubble bath, shipwreck, handstand, sister-in-law, station wagon.

Now it’s your turn! 1. Write a sentence with a collective noun in the subject. 2. Write a sentence with a compound noun in the predicate. 3. Write a sentence with an abstract noun. 4. Write a sentence that uses a common noun and a proper noun. 5. Write a sentence using at least three different types of nouns.

What is a Noun Phrase? A word or group of words that functions in a sentence as subject, object and prepositional object Simpler terms – The group of words that does the work of the noun

Identifying Noun Phrases Can be replaced by pronouns ◦ My father gave this book to my mother (He gave it to her)

More Examples… (Noun Phrases are in bold) All the kids are sleeping The boy in the blue jeans says he’ll go first You are a true hero Mom baked chocolate chip cookies Will you talk with these rude people?

Now you try! Copy the sentences below and underline the noun phrase 1. Did you enjoy reading this book? 2. I enjoy playing tennis 3. We all hope to succeed at life 4. His winning the first prize surprised me 5. My father hates having dinner so late

Pronouns and Antecedents A pronoun is a word that can take the place of a noun in a sentence. Antecedents are the nouns for which the pronouns stand.

Pronouns and Antecedents Would you ever say: “Michael said Michael lost Michael’s watch.”? Instead, you replace the last two Michael’s with a pronoun: ◦ Michael said he lost his watch. He and his are pronouns. Michael is the antecedent, because he and his stand for the noun Michael.

Examples The words in bold are antecedents, the words in pink are pronouns. ◦ When the Levines moved, they gave their pets to the neighbors. ◦ Because of its carnival, Rottweil, Germany is my favorite city.

Let’s Practice Identify the pronoun(s) and the antecedent. 1. Miss Holcombe said that incomplete assignments make her sad. 2. After class, Susan and LeAnn tutored their siblings in math. 3. Morning practice can be tiring, but it is also fun. 4. We gave our old clothes to the salvation army. 5. The girls play their rival team in the soccer game on Friday.

17 Personal Pronoun Most popular pronouns. You use them to refer to yourself and the people and things around you. Examples: I, me, you, we, ours, their, they…
