10. Hoover Responds: Review Your Previous Assignment

10. Describe at Least Two Actions that May Have Cost Hoover the 1932 Presidential Election:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Defeats Hoover in 1932 Former progressive gov. of New York (D) “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.”

11. Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) “…the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…”

11. Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) What did FDR mean when he said this? (What’s going on at the time…)

11. Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) By 1933 more than 9,000 banks had failed (43%) 38 states closed banks He means that fear leads to bank runs which makes situation worse- sound familiar?

Hoover vs. FDR Hoover tried to calm the public to avoid more bank runs- so what was the difference? FDR had a plan- a bold, big plan (or he was at least working on it…)

12. The Hundred Days March 9 – June 16, 1933 = the Hundred Days Congress passes 15 acts to fight the Depression Later known as the First New Deal.

12. The Hundred Days Roosevelt pushed congress to pass laws to restore confidence in the banks, combat overproduction and put people back to work. He focused on the 3 R’s: relief, recovery 7 reform.

13. What Increased Under Roosevelt’s New Deal? Think of the cartoon… The size and role of the federal government! (and people’s confidence in the govt. & economy)
